Bubble Skylight vs. Flat Skylight?

lol if you’re contractor is worried about leaks and having to warranty…..time to find a new contractor. We had our sklight replaced by Michael Sheehan C.C.Construction Corp. (Owner) m.g.sheehan@gmail.com (917)626-1254

First time posting here! Really love this community. It has been a real resource for us as we go through our renovation! So, we are looking into installing 3 skylights on the top floor of our brownstone (1 hatch and 2 sealed skylights) in Bed-Stuy. Our contractor is suggesting that we use bubble skylights rather than flat panel skylights as bubbles are better at preventing leaks and allowing more sunlight in, especially during snow. The catch is that bubble skylights are at least 50%-75% more expensive than regular flat panel skylights. Is the extra expense of a bubble skylight really worth it? Also, is this something that we should really look into for all 3 skylights or just the hatch skylight? Anyone gone the bubble or flat panel skylight route and regretted their decision? Thanks!

I have a flat, working Velux skylight in the bedroom of my top floor. It looks good and lets in a lot of light, but it collects a lot of dirt (actual dirt, water spots, bird droppings). We also have a static pyramid-shaped skylight over the stairway. I think it looks better aesthetically and it stays noticeably cleaner. They are in two different locations, so its difficult to compare the light they let in. Had we put a flat skylight over the stairs, the dirt would bug me but it probably wouldn’t make the list of a renovation regrets. That said, I’m happy we went for the pyramid. PS. Our pyramid shaped one is from Superior Tin Smith in Brooklyn. When we were pricing the skylight for over the stairs, it came to $800 more than the Velux bid, install included.[](http://http://www.superiortinsmith.com/Superior_Tinsmith_Supply_Brooklyn_NY.html)

Most of my customers who have brownstones are having the same problem with the flat skylight,(dirty, leaks, snow built up) they are looking into changing to the bubble skylight. i would say the bubble skylight is best. Fawn thank you for the info where to locate the skylight, i will pass on the info. Good luck

Thank you all for your responses! This is very helpful. I think we will go with a bubble skylight.

yeh but can you get a “double glazed” bubble style? Being located in the roof at the highest point wont most of the hot air escape up through this “leak spot”?

Hi there! If you’re interested in finding the best skylight on the market, I’d recommend checking that link: http://www.archiexpo.com/architecture-design-manufacturer/skylight-871.html . It really help me chose the ideal solution for my place.

Hi Fawn, I’m looking to replace our old pyramid with a new pyramid from Superior Tin, but they told me they won’t install and my contractor doesn’t want to install either. He’s nervous about leaks. Can I ask who installed it for you? And if you’ve had any issues will leaks or draughts? We’re wondering if we need to pay double for insulated glass? Many thanks, Susan
