Remove window security bars? Or replace them with quick release bars?

I just bought a house in Bed-Stuy (Bainbridge & Ralph Ave). On my block, about half the houses have window security bars, and half do not. My insurance company (State Farm) has said that I need to do one of the following with them… A. Remove the window security bars B. Or replace them with quick release bars I’m leaning towards removing them because half of my block already has. But then supplementing my house by installing a security system. But what do you think? Anyone in Bed-Stuy removed their bars and have any insights to share? Also, do you know of a company that does window security bar removal? I’ve found several that do replacements, but none for removal.

Look around in angieslist, there you’ll find a lot of good companies who does this type of work.

Hi! I live nearby to post author Josh on Macdonough St and I want to remove the front security gates from the parlor floor of our house because they obscure the original front doors and stained glass windows. If anyone has suggestions for removal or is interested in buying them from me drop a line! They are beautiful old gates but not for me. Have a nice day !

We had a similar issue when insuring our house. Brownstone Agency is a good suggestions – we have our current insurance through them. But you might also want to get in touch with Liberty Mutual – they insured our place for the first year, no concerns raised over the security bars, and they were also extremely helpful in terms of umbrella liability coverage.

Contact the Brownstone Agency. Their name tells you the obvious.

We received the same letter from SF, complied, and were promptly broken into losing in excess of $50k. When I told them this was their fault, they told me that the letters are worded strongly but there are other alternatives which we SHOULD have explored under their guidance. I have no words for how inept this sham of an insurance company is. I would eliminate altogether but having a security system is certainly a good idea for peace of mind and it will also lower your premiums. I would advise looking elsewhere and if you purchased your policy from the local Bed Stuy agent and want to remain insured under SF, switch agents ASAP.

From what I’ve heard (and recall reading here on the forum), Sate Farm usually requires bars to be removed/modified. Other insurance companies do not. You could look into switching insurance companies.
