We went through a whole crazy thing on the back of our house (we have a timber frame house from 1901. We suffered leaks that came into the first floor ceiling. Knew it wasn’t the roof. Couldn’t figure out how the water was getting in. Tried numerous water tests. We thought, in the end, it was the siding. Halfway through the re-siding job I climb up to the roof to inspect the job at the roof/gutter and siding seam, I look over to the dark side of the chimney and notice a gaping split all the way down. (I had to lay down and look over from the neighbors side to see that vantage). $20,000 residing job not needed*. I didn’t find it before I had to call someone. The contractor didn’t catch it…in the end it was a $20 piece of flashing that fixed the leak.

I think the downspout is a smart thing to check, but also look at the vertical seams of your chimney (if you have one). Look from a vantage point that you may not have easy access to, such as your neighbors roof or yard. You may see something.

*It was good we re-sided because now we have modern insulation, sheathing and siding on those walls now.

Keep in mind to, that with old wood frame, they are ballon construction which means the wall units are assembled with long studs usually without fire stops, so the water can enter up top and travel down the inside, often on the wood siding itself.

They sell the heated wire at Home Depot. It is ready to install with the plug already attached. It may be called something like “gutter deicing cable.”
