The living room ceiling in our 1907 townhouse started leaking this morning. We assumed it was a leak in the roof, but when we poked our heads up in the attic crawlspace to see if we could see where it was coming from we can’t see any roof leaks, but do see some some pipes up there (that don’t look original) that might be the culprit?? Anyone have any experience with this? We know we need a professional, we just don’t know which kind to call now that we’ve seen these pipes.

Thanks!

Since there was melting snow this morning I’d start with a roofer. I wonder why there are pipes in your cock loft. Might they be gas pipes, from the original lighting?

Yes I agree with Bob, gas pipes that leak water. Just kidding. Your vent pipes go out through the roof. It sounds like you have a roof leak. Get a roofer.

Both. When was the last time work was done on the pipes or the roof. If it’s been a decade or more have both come in the visit costs will be worth it if they find something that is about to go off on you.

Good luck.

Thanks, everyone! We think Bob is right it was the snow melting so quickly yesterday.

Now, anyone have roofer recommendations? The forum mentions Premier a lot but it looks like they can’t come out to give us an estimate for quite some time.

As a plumbing company owner myself, I would recommend that you call a plumber first. Find one that will come out and give you a free on site estimate. We get these all the time…and sometimes it ends up to be plumbing and if its not, we let the customer know to call a roofing company. This way you wont be out of pocket for calling the plumber. Anyways I know I might be a little late to this post but there is my two cents. Anyways, as for finding a good roofer, check to make sure they have high quality online reviews. Make sure they have a reputable website like mine http://www.colepepperplumbing.com

It depends on where in the ceiling the leak is showing itself and what type of roof you have.
If you have the typical “flat” roof that pitches towards the back of the house and that is where the leak is showing itself near the rear leader pipe, that goes down the back of the house, it is probably that your pipe is slightly blocked at the top, with the thaw the water builds up and finds a way into the house. Solution keep the back gutters and leaders clear of Autumn leaves etc and if on a north facing wall, maybe add an electric pipe tape around the leader pipe to stop ice build-up in freezing winters.
If it is a leak somewhere else in the ceiling; higher up the pitch of of the roof or the party walls, check your flashing, again in freezing weather they can spring leaks with contraction of cold an expansion of melting. A roofer is generally what is needed if you are not handy yourself. You do not have plumbing in the ceiling of a flat roof house.
If you have a pit ched roof, you may have some plumbing up there if you have circulation pipes, expansion tanks etc. In which case call a plumber first.
