Which wood for stairs?
We’re looking to rebuild our stairs in our common hallway shared with a few tenants.
Anyone have suggestions for type of wood to use- I’ve heard red oak, white oak and poplar suggested.
Poplar is a good amount cheaper but we don’t want to cheap out at the risk of having them not hold up as long.
Any pros and cons to share from people who have redone their stairs? Thanks

“A few Tenants” so is it a multiple dwelling? by DOB standards.
To replace a common hallway stair you will need to file for a building permit. They may well want a fireproof stair case.
To repair & restore the existing you can keep the wooden staircase.

Hi stickerhappy,
White oak sounds like it could be a good option for you. It will be more expensive than poplar, but is very versatile and will age well. It is best used with a stain so you experience the grain and natural qualities of the wood. Poplar has a green tint and is very challenging to stain. It is really meant to be painted. If your plan is to paint them, then poplar might be the way to go. However, white oak will give you the most versatility and will be easier to refinish in the future.
