What type of door encloses storage area under brownstone stoop?

When we moved in to our home the front street level stoop was an open metal staircase. That was replaced with a concrete stoop, a recreation of the historic original. The storage area under the steps is currently open. Mosquitos like this environment in the summer and appear to breed there. The area is currently water tight, except for moisture from rain and snow that accumulate there after coming in through the front entry door which is open work metal. I plan to place some type of barrier on the lower portion of the door to lessen the chance of rain and snow entering the entry way, and to keep small animals from using the area as a dining room. I would like to know what other brownstones have installed as doors under the ground floor stoop storage area.

What EJR & murph said. You need to have air curculating underneath there. My brownstone came with the original wrought iron gate that had a modern deadbolt welded to it. I’m sure you can find these at the local ironmongers. Instead of a mailbox, I cut out a section at the top and all the mail got put through that, including small parcels.

Nothing like the original gate with an airtight insulated door at the facade opening.

The stoop and below don’t keep the house warm in winter. The house envelope starts at the facade. Insulate and seal the gap above and around the interior insulated door. A second vestibule door is better still.

I stripped my gate down to the metal and mounted a lamp fixture on timer to back light it. Again, this and the insulated door($99 on sale at Home Depot) I installed. I think it all looks good. I meant to say ‘authentic’. That’s what everyone wants to hear on this blog.

FWIW, our area below the stoop was far more gross when we had a door there than it is now that we have removed the door. We still have the gate for security. No matter what you do short of full water sealing and dry-walling, it is an outdoor area. The added door will make it far mustier and grosser.

Regardless of what door you decide on, you might want to sprinkle the area w/ Mosquito Dunk Nuggets or a Dunk set down where moisture accumulates.

FWIW we had a board and batten door in the cellar, leading to the coal chute. The door to the space under the stoop might well have been a later addition installed by an amateur. It didn’t close right for the entire time we owned the house until two weeks ago when we had a carpenter fix it–it was about 1/2″ to wide and had to be cut down on the hinge side.

I’ve wondered the same thing and occaisionally photographed doors under stoops when I’ve been on house tours. The old looking ones seem to be board and batten.

I have a simple wooden panel door that’s probably the 1899 original [PROBABLY because it’s a different pattern than the other panel doors in my house]. I’ve seen inexpensive pre-hung fiberglass doors that look similar and, once painted, would be indistinguishable from wood.
