To keep or not to keep a vestibule door
Hello – we are renovating a townhouse and just about done with the demo. A question we are faced with is whether or not to keep the vestibule door. We will have double doors to enter the house then a door to enter our unit. The tenant’s unit will be upstairs. Our contractor asked us to give some thought to just having the exterior double doors and doing away with the vestibule door in its entirety. We are not sure what to think. What do you guys think? Brownstoner has been a daily read for us for the past 5 years and all the ideas and knowledge we have gathered from other readers has been extremely valuable so thank you in advance. Sam

Thanks. That make sense. We have decided to go with a vestibule door.

Don’t forget, the double doors can be drafty. The inside door is easier to insulate.

Thanks, Bob. I am with you on both points. We are going to go with two sets of doors. Thanks again.

I think the two sets of doors look much better than having a door enter directly into living space, although that’s just my subjective aesthetic opinion. Beyond that the dead air space between the two sets of doors is a great insulator in winter.
