Tips on insulation for cockloft & exposed brick.

Hi everyone, appreciate your advice. I have a cockloft in my Greenpoint brick house that is completely uninsulated. Heat bleeds from many places in the house, but I suspect this is the biggest culprit. I’m thinking of blowing in spray foam, but wanted to see if others have done this, and what their experience has been. One thing to note is that I’m likely going to renovate the upstairs in the next 3-4 years, which likely will mean tearing down the existing plaster ceilings, so it would be best to use insulation below the roof rather than above the ceiling.

Other question. My north and south basement walls are exposed brick, which on the north side is a bit decayed due to water damage in the past (that’s been solved). Is there any recommended solution for insulating this, other than using wall insulation and framing it? I understand that brick needs to “breathe” so I’m not sure if the spray foam / cellulose wold make sense.

Thank you!

I had cellulose insulation blown in >40 years ago. If you’re just going to replace sagging plaster that’s too bad for plaster washers and skim coat the ceiling the wood lath will keep it in place.
