I am renovating a condo in a pre-war apartment building. I want to replace the old cast iron radiators with modern flat wall mounted units. Does anyone have any experience they can share doing this replacement? Thanks.

Generally , only will work with hot water heat, not steam. Also way lower btu output, so get it properly sized

Look at www.steamradiators.com and www.castrads.com for alternative radiator ideas.

oh I bought years ago and all was ok. I wonder if the radiators are backordered due to Brexit issues, or perhaps Covid shipping slowdowns?

Possible – some go back a few years.

Most High End companies have issues with Supply and Support; especially the UK ones. Nothing to do with Brexit or the ongoing situation They also are much more expensive to repair and a lot of “Plumbers” install them incorrectly.
I tell the clients I see Keep it Simple; plus a lot of companies now have different options. For radiators it is Straight and Simple: Governale.

The radiators I am replace are old single-pipe steam clunkers. Is the consensus that replacement with something new/cool/flat is only an option for hot-water units?

I bought Runtals

as mp noted you can use these options for steam :
www.steamradiators.com
www.castrads.com
that said, if you go for the steam radiators.com (runtal) be aware that steel radiators have a lower btu output and lose heat far more quickly than cast iron

Also beware that one pipe steam rads have to be slightly pitched toward the supply valve which may make a sleek unit look awkward
