Removing Sheetrock from a Plaster Wall

Help! We had our contractor remove the Sheetrock covering our plaster ceiling. The ceiling had been lowered about eight inches. and the Sheetrock was screwed onto a framework. All of that was removed.

The ceiling has some cracks, and it looks like an electrician had fun poking holes in it but it seems fixable.. unfortunately there is a plaster cove around the ceiling with a decorative plaster garland above the place where the picture molding went. The walls are Sheetrock applied over plaster with glue and the plaster was applied directly to brick (no lath). Unfortunately the Sheetrock covers part of the old plaster garland.
Is there any way to remove the Sheetrock from the walls? If we try that the plaster under it may come off in chunks. — I’m not optimistic. The Sheetrock glue is like tar.

It’s a 1900s house and I really want the ceiling height so we can put the moldings back on the doors and windows. Whoever had that wall board glued on removed much detail. especially truncating the window casings so they could lower the ceilings.

Would like to know best wa y to handle this.
Perhaps relinquish the cove and decoration, patch the Sheetrock to square the part where ceiling meets wall,! and go with sone Lincrusta?.

Since we are renovating the ceiling was at risk of coming down., so they had to do it ASAP. The finish work will happen in a few weeks. The ceiling is secure now and the electrician can work., then they will be back to do the white plaster etc.

I’m happy to say we have found a wonderful company, Urban Plaster, who is able to save the ceiling and restore the decorative cornices and scrollwork. Jason and his crew have already begun by pinning the ceiling and applying a scratch coat. Our electrician will have to get in there to put the box in for the light but Once that’s done the plaster will be finished .

That’s smart. Maybe can have a plaster expert restore/skim coat it all rather than replace with drywall (depending on extent of damage), removing the plaster frieze, and then have a wallpaper person install a Lincrusta frieze, if you can find one that works. Price that out too.

I do like the idea of tin Cate, as we have some old tin in the kitchen and one small bedroom. I’ll always prefer to fix for once and for all than cover up, if all else is equal. But it may be a good option if all else fails.

Lincrusta ceiling dadoes aren’t seen in most of the neighbors’ homes (in our row) but sone people have Lincrusta in the stairwell. They do make some in the swag, Adams urn, scroll and other appropriate patterns specifically for ceiling borders.

Consult immediately with several plaster experts (not drywall people nor general contractors) for the most efficient procedure and bids. Do not remove the plaster, gut renovate, or replace plaster with sheetrock without consulting a plaster expert first and seeing what your options are and what it will cost. It sounds like it’s in good condition and may be easily fixable. Plaster experts can replicate the garlands although that kind of fancy work will be more expensive than skim coating. As for the Lincrusta, it would be strange to put that on the cove, the cornice or the ceiling. (it’s usually used for wainscoting) One option other than plaster that will give you the height you need as well as decorations and that is relatively inexpensive is covering the plaster ceiling and cornice/cove with a tin ceiling and tin cornice. Of course it may or may not be appropriate, depending on the room and the house. Good luck.

The best result would come from just ripping everything down to the studs/brick. Then you can properly insulate, add any outlets/lights you’d like, level/plumb the ceiling and walls. Coves and any other decorations can be easily added back once you have a perfectly drywalled room.

Once you start touching the cove/decorations it’s going to rip out all the way to the lath/brick. which creates a huge patch job, and trying to square these old walls with plaster isn’t for the faint of heart. It’ll end up taking more time, money, and energy vs just spending 2 days ripping it down and putting drywall panels up.
