Parquet
Has anyone made their own parquet tile s? We have some short pieces left over from our floor and we are thinking of using them in a small area of the house. (About 5 x 8 feet) The wood is oak tongue and groove floot boards. We can do a simple pattern of checker-like blocks with a plain border. What kind of glue to join the wood? Will the tiles need the tongues and grooves? ? Glue or face nail? Thanks in advance.

I should have said we were worried about the gluing the last board. Not the first.

so i am not sure i would glue them up into parquet squares first. that parquet square thing, that is a modern convenience. in years past, these were just laid out to form squares, albeit out of perfectly cut pieces. i have had to patch these things with wood i cut myself and for the most part, it was me and a mitre saw and nail gun working on the floor, right over the patch. if you leave the tongues on most of them, you can edge nail them, tapping them in tight with a scrap groove edge put over the tongue of the board you are nailing. if you have to hold any in tight as you nail, place a sharp chisel into the sub floor at a slight angle and against the piece you are trying to nail and push against it a little.
in so far as gluing. when we did nailed patches, we were not worried about all of the boards, just first one really as when doing a patch you either cut a tongue off or break the bottom of the groove off and therefore that piece is not held down and once it moves , the others will follow. though in this case, if you do not use twist shank na ils (when doing patches, i used to use twist shank flooring nails; when doing full floors, cleats from a nailer) but instead use say 15 guage nails from a finish nailer (i have done that too where we could not get the floor nailer up against a wall) you may want to glue a every few courses anyway. You can always rent a floor nailer from HD. they have the manual ones and those with air compressors.
in so far as adhesive. i would use something such as PL400. the 400 is impervious to water so if there is a spill, you will be safe. also, the 3/4 flooring has a relief cut in the back of it and if you use the thick PL product, it will press up into that void and give you more grab area and less chance of a void pulling away. use the pl where there will be two course unbound by the tounge and groove. (i just read what you said about that black adhesive, not sure if that will be compatible with the PL400 not sure how much remains on the old wood).
in so far as removing the tongues or the bottom of the groove, i have tapped them off with a sharp chisel and using a router on something that small must be dangerous anyway.

To further explain, our questions are: what kind of glue to use to assemble the blocks, and how to put together the blocks on the subfloor.
. The wood strips were cut with the original tongues preserved on the boards, glued up with clamps and then trimmed with a groove cut into them with a router. They fit well (they are laid here very loosely, just to see how it looks) except that some if the grooves have to be sanded a bit for a better fit.
To make the pattern, half of the tiles have to be turned sideways. Along the edges, this means that there is either a tongue or a groove. Alternating tiles will have a groove against the groove of the border, so they won’t be locked together I those places. Do we glue? nail? cut more tiles with tongues on three sides? The tongues are hard for us to cut as we have to make two router cuts perfectly on the edge of he blocks to do this. I think glue would work just fine, but perhaps someone who has experience laying parquet can help answer our question. Remember these are 3/4 inch thick not the thinner blocks used on the old floors th at were attached to the subfloor with nails and tar.
Are we doing okay going in this direction or do we need to change something we are doing?

Picture attached. We tried out a few. Used ordinary yellow wood glue. [B5CC80A6-6505-4960-B205-783BC0D38EC4](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s3/:brownstoner:RS99:b5cc80a665054960b205783bc0d38ec4.jpeg.jpg)
