Outlet Placement?

Hi all, We have recently bought a new brownstone 4-story house (well, an old one that is new to us!) and are working with an electrician to help us update the electrics, which appear to be untouched since around the 30’s. Can anybody offer advice on where we should be placing outlets? Obviously we have “code” to deal with, but where possible we would prefer to exceed code and end up with something that doesn’t require to rip out our walls every few years to run new lines. Any other recommendations welcome, of course!

August, there are plenty of reasons to have more than 2 outlets in a bathroom. It’s actually a major annoyance for me. We have electric toothbrushes and my husband’s razer that all need to stay plugged in. Then when I want to use a hairdryer (most days) or plug in a space heater, it’s a pain to move everything around. If you have more counter space than I do, you might want to plug in other things, like a radio or charger for a phone.

I find the code requirements for spacing outlets excessive. Every wall partition that’s longer than 2 ft … doesn’t make sense to me. And slandoo – what do you need more than 2 outlets in a bathroom for?

You can never have too many outlets in the bathroom and kitchen, but making code near water is a design challenge. Find legal places and load them in there. You want them up high for counter access not hidden in cabinetry. Think about outdoor outlets for garden lights, front door, gate, xmas decorations, and whatever power tool you might want to use in the garden, with enough amps to handle it. Basement outlets are a great luxury and best to wire them up higher in case of flooding, just saying… If you dont have central Air, think of a 220 line to key windows where you might want a powerful in-wall or above-door unit installed. Same if you are installing a laundry room. Think about the kind of walls you have– the masonry walls can be cut into to install your conduits but you never want to have to open that up again because of the mess and cost of replastering and painting, so err on the side of abundance especially on those brick common (shared) walls. Some folks deal wiht this in renovation by putting floor sockets in but it can get ugly IMO unless you never change where that end table is going to be, if they are even legal, I’ve never been sure. If you have some thought of a home office, put outlets up at desk level so you dont have to move your furniture to get at the outlet, and put in plenty. An outlet at the top of the stairs is amazing when you vacuum and hardly ever see those. I wish I’d run power to places I would now like to electrify like my awning, or even roof deck, which is impossible to afford now. Every outlet costs you something but it is nearly always worth it over time, more is better, they all get used and you will always want more. By the way, you want to make sure you have enough service coming in– time to deal with that is now. Power is — power.

I’ve been through this a few times so I’ll probably say too much. If I were doing much work on the walls, I might want a few like [this](http://www.familyhandyman.com/electrical/wiring-outlets/install-a-wall-hugger-receptacle), particularly in the living room area for behind furniture. Clearly these aren’t always ideal, but I think would be great in some places. I might also put in some of the ones that also have usb slots on the side, good near a bed or near a desk. Think about where you’ll need more: lots of devices around the tv?, lots of appliances to plug in on the kitchen counters?, do you have a heavy duty computer set-up with lots of other devices? do you plug in more than a hairdryer in the bathroom, such as razors or toothbrushes? And always add more than you think you need: either have them frequently along the walls or have some with 4 plugs instead of 2\. Consider them in the hallways (great for vacuuming or other random power needs there). An outlet outside never hurts, if you have any outdoor space (we put one in our stoop and by the back door outside). Other misc. electrical that I appreciate in our house or wish we had: -Programmable switches for outdoor and vestibule lights–you can set it to come on and off at certain times so there’s always a light on when you get home after dark (I can look up which brand I got that we like if you want). -Timer switches for bathroom vent fans (you can just let it run for 1-30 minutes and not have to worry about going back to turn it off). -If your bathrooms are cold, you can get various combos in ceiling fixtures that include heat. We have heat/fan/light ones that we really like to go with the main light source. -For stairwell and hallway lights, having a switch for a light on multiple levels in amazing. I love being able to turn on/off a light down a level from where I am. -Wireless doorbells are okay, but a wired one is way better and far less likely to give you trouble if installed properly. Put a chime on multiple levels so you can hear it everywhere. -Run cable wire through the walls if possible so you don’t have them strung and stapled around the walls and door frames.
