New light fixture, old gas pipe and plaster molding

Hi all, I know this has come up before but the discussions were closed and the answers didn’t directly answer my questions. I purchased a new, more modern light fixture to replace the small chandelier in our entryway. Upon removal of the old fixture we discovered that it was being supported by what is believed to be an old gas pipe. In addition, the “base” of the new light fixture is approx. 5″-6″ in diameter and the diameter of the old one is approx 3″-4″. Is there a way to hang a new fixture to be hung where the old style of mount was used? Our contractor and his electrician recommend putting a new mounting bracket which would lead to the loss of the plaster medallion that is currently present. Any suggestions? That photo looks like what’s in my house. I hope you saved the fitting from your old fixture that threads onto the gas pipe. If so bring it to the hardware store. If the old pipes are like the ones in my house they might have odd sizes and thread pitch.

bob, really, this is not my thing. i just told that as a curiosity. it was one of the real old valves, the fancy ones with the scroll work and brass thumb turn (i like old stuff). frankly, if it were my house, i would cut the old line as soon as it leaves the meter and run a new one for the stove. this way you do not have guys like me who are curious about old things turning valves that they may uncover in walls and which may not later close properly. also, i was watching national grid work next to where i was working in lower manhattan last year and i noticed they had put some pressure guages on the lines going into an old building. i thought they were doing a pressure test. what they told me, and it was very interesting and these young folks who were running this operation really enjoyed explaining it to me, was that as they changed the city main, they had to maintain pressure into the building because depressurizing a line can cause it to leak and national grid did not want to be on the hook for that. that was enough for me to consider these old lines to be unservicable.

the house on garfield should not have had that valve left in the basement. of course, if it did not close after i opened it, i would have dealt with the situation properly at my cost. but legally, i do believe a valve not hooked to an appliance has to have cap after it. there was no way to do that with this valve as it had once of those old graduated connections that looked like it was made to receive a hose.

Steve—isn’t it enough to cut the old gas pipes in the cellar? That’s what was done in my house, long before I bought it.

I found one of these old fixtures on the basement of a house on Garfield st and out of curiosity I opened the valve; gas came out of it. that house has since been renovated and I would bet the old gas lines were ripped out.

Great info from Bob Marvin above. Also please be aware the gas pipe may be capped but still have active gas in it. This is not a problem as long as you don’t do anything to damage or puncture the pipe. If it is active, it may be on the same line as your stove gas, so you don’t want to do anything that would compromise the line. Also, right now, National Grid isn’t extending any new gas lines.

I have several fixtures hung from gas pipes in my 1899 house, both vintage [chandeliers] and modern [ceiling fans]. If you’re lucky you can use the “gas hickey” from the old fixture to physically attach the new one to the gas pipe.. Otherwise a GOOD hardware store [like my personal favorite–Leopoldi’s, on 5th Ave, bet. 7th and 8th Streets] can sell you a combination of parts to fit the gas pipe. There are a couple of ways to take up the space needed to cover the gas pipe. The neatest IMO would be to replace the canopy of the modern fixture with an antique bell-shaped canopy, or a modern reproduction of one. Here are some repros although, IMO, vintage ones are better–I’m sure you can find them on eBay or Etsy or, maybe, at big reuse:

If this isn’t possible there are spacers that you can use to take up the space left by the relatively flat canopy that comes with your modern fixture. You can stack as many as you need. The one time I used these, with a ceiling fan, I painted them to match the ceiling. With a nother ceiling fan I made a spacer out of a large tin can and painted it to match the fan’s canopy.

Good luck. Under no circumstance should you damage your plaster medallion tp hand the fixture. It’s completely unnecessary.
