We have a mysterious leak in the bathroom that is causing our wall to bubble and discolor, and no one seems to be able to diagnose it. We escalated from our super to a handyman to a licensed and insured plumber, but no one has figured it out. So now we’re turning to you. We’re looking for recommendations a gifted plumber who will get to the bottom of this leak? The problem area is on the wall opposite the showerhead, where the wall meets the tile just above the tub line. We installed a shower guard, which did not help, and I never thought that was the issue anyway. Our dishwasher is on the other side of the wall, but everyone who took a look behind the wall said it was dry and not the source. Our upstairs neighbor recently did a gut reno, and we noticed the issues slightly after that wrapped up. (A plumber who came on behalf of our co-op said that was not the issue.) Thank you!

The issue is most likely related to construction done upstairs. Good luck.

We’ve used B&D plumbing for over 10 years and are very happy with their work for us. They are professional and neat. They worked on a few leak issues for us over the years when we had tenants and were always able to find the culprit.

The OP is seeking a “gifted plumber who will get to the bottom of this leak” and describes the problem as on the wall opposite the shower head, where the “wall meets the tile just above the tub line.” Yet plumbers and the super have not identified the source of the water as a plumbing leak. Other than misplaced faith in the waterproof properties of porous materials, why jump to the conclusion that a pipe is leaking?

Open the wall above the dishwasher and take a look. If you can get your upstairs neighbor to cooperate have him run the water and you’ll probably be able to figure out where the leak is (or isn’t) coming from.

what gennady and webby say are so obvious that there must be a reason no one has opened the wall ABOVE where the leak is appearing (on the kitchen side) to see if it is coming down from above – my guess is there are cabinets hanging above the dishwasher, right? this is what I would do – get one of those cameras on the end of a cable. A borescope. they are about $150.00 now which is small beans when compared to the damage this leak is going to cause. Drill a hole in the cabinets above the dishwasher and stick that thing in there and have a look. if I had a borescope I would come and do this for the cost of the scope, but I don’t have one. Steve

It is not obvious to me a leaky pipe will be discovered above the dishwasher. I don’t have one of those fancy cameras. They look great on TV home improvement shows, but I am saving my money for a new tile saw. Just what kind of pipe could it be? A supply line pipe would be known by now. Water from a pressurized supply pipe would spray or drip continuously and would have damaged the wall above the dishwasher a long time ago. But, the OP says it is not even wet there. A waste pipe draining the fixture above where the problem is reported to be visible, is not under pressure and could drip slowly when in use, or until a trap or low spot is empty. Gennady, Webby, Steve: Do you think a waste pipe draining a fixture or appliance above the dishwasher is causing moisture at the tub rim? What fixture? What appliance? OP: Is there mold on or near the ceiling? Pealing paint? Near the dishwasher? Above the tub? Anywhere? You didn’t mention it. If not a fixture or appliance above, does anybody suspect rain water from the roof or a window? I doubt it, but I would be less surprised by rainwater penetration, than a leaking pipe.
