Matching crown molding for built-in bookcase renovation

Hi, I’m well into the process of having built-in bookcases designed for my Prospect Heights co-op. The idea is to have the bookcases extend to the ceiling and have the existing molding continue around the built-ins to make them look like part of the original room. The problem is that the builder has only been able to approximate, not exactly match, the molding. I’m worried that this will look sloppy at the intersection of the two pieces. He’s essentially recreating my original molding using three pieces of Dykes molding, but again, it isn’t exact. What are the best ways to find matches for original molding? My existing molding can’t be that old, and I want to believe an exact match exists out there somewhere. I want to make sure I’ve exhausted all options before going with the imperfect version. Or am I being fussy about this and is it a compromise people deal with all of the time?

Many thanks in advance for any responses.

rw

I have had great success with Steve Wilson at Monteath Moulding. They are really easy to work with. Worth a trip to Old Bridge. They have been around since 1860 and they will let you browse through all their historic knives if you ask nicely. They generally charge about $50 per inch of custom knife and maybe $200 for a setup charge. http://www.monteath.com/

If you can get OLD HOUSE JOURNAL archives you might see how it’s done. Same with THIS OLD HOUSE early shows(where they showed you how it’s done rather than who to pay an exorbitant amount to do it for you).

Or, ask yourself if you really need to “go to the ceiling” with those built-in bookcases. I replaced an entire ceiling that was falling in and preserved the intact crown molding by cutting away the ceiling plaster(1905) close to the molding’s edge with a grinder using a masonry wheel(or two). Yes, I had help from a carpenter(a Kerryman) who owed me a favor. It worked. Takes time and patience but it was all done and replaced with sheet rock in one weekend. A second Kerryman assisted on Sunday. Don’t ever say the ‘undocumented’ don’t do skilled work.

I saw his done on THIS OLD HOUSE. You take a mold of the original work and then duplicate it using plaster and eventually whatever material you want to use.

Are you wanting wooden molding or plaster? Both are easy enough to duplicate, but are very different crafts.

We JUST paid 275 to have knife made of our custom door casing at Adriatic. After that, they charge you same amount as stock run for the actual moldings they make. We got a crap ton of molding for just over 700 dollars, knife included.

I think we got between 14 and 16 eitght foot lengths of the door casing plus the knife for that amount.

I think the issue is that it would come up a little short. He said it was because some of it always gets damaged in the removal process, but in my eyes, it’s because you need a section from the wall that’s stlightly wider than the width of the bookcase because of the angle you have to cut the corner end at, if that makes sense.

The contractor should easily be able to get a multi tool blade under the molding and cut the nails and take down the molding. I have done this many times. If he says he can’t you should probably get someone else ( this is very basic carpentry ). To make new molding it will cost approximately $200 for the blade and $150 for the set up on the shaper. You will have to pay for the material ( wood ). It shouldn’t cost more then $500-$600 unless you’re getting a large amount.

This sounds like the contractor is resisting because it’s more work than getting stock molding at home depot. He most likely doesn’t have the (most likely) expensive tool that is needed to make the custom blade, but as others have said, there are a number of local wood shops that do, and the whole thing should likely cost far less than $1,000. The actual cost of making the blade is probably $5, so even adding in the wood shop’s markup, I can’t imagine the blade costing you more than $100. The remainder of the cost will be the lumber, but it sounds like you need so little, I can’t see this being very expensive either. Perhaps just ask your contractor to salvage you a 1′-2′ piece of the molding and then you can do the rest of the work to source the blade and new molding?

The knives won’t add $1,000 unless he doesn’t have the machine to use them and has to buy one. As others have posted above, there are places that can reproduce the moldings unless your contractor is not amenable to you getting the moldings reporduced there or he’s too lazy to do it. Go there and get estimates.

As it turns out, since the molding never comes off the wall cleanly, it will fall short of the needed length, so I’m back to square one. Any other thoughts on the best ways to find matches? The builder said that to actually recreate it, they’d need to actually make knives to do the work and it would add another 1K to the project cost.

Oh my god! How did I not think of that?! Yes there’s molding where the bookcases will go. Thank you so much. But if that’s so easy to do, why didn’t my builder bring it up? I’m also still curious to know how one goes about finding matches for this stuff. Let me know if anyone has any ideas

Unless it is plaster, you can take a piece off the wall and then have it re-set. Also, isn’t there molding where the bookcases are going to go? Take it off the wall and then use it on the bookcases, then you just need to cover a little bit with a replication.

I’d take a piece off the wall and bring it to them. I agree it wont look right if you with a different molding.

They make a tool called a contour gauge duplicator that you can order on amazon that will recreate your moldings profile.

I don’t have a spare piece, only what’s up on the wall. I’m assuming they can’t work much from a photograph

If you have a piece of the molding your trying to match, bring it to a woodshop like Adriatic or Heights Woodworking.. they can duplicate it
