Laying new floor over old- ok or bad idea?
I had it done in one of my apartments about 3 1/2 yrs ago. Put the new solid wood floor right over the old with a thin fabric material between. The floor is solid and provides some extra sound insulation. I also put a wood floor over an existing linoleum tile floor which was not exactly level in numerous places. When I asked the floor contractor to figure in total leveling of the entire floor before installing the new he fought me on it all the way. Saying the expense would not give any visual benefit and you could not feel the out of level areas in the first place. He was right and I saved a ton of $. That was 4 years ago.

We are doing a renovation and debating whether to refinish the old existing but damaged floors or put down a new floor.
If we put down a new floor, it’s already an additional expense so we hoped to save some money by just putting the new floor down on top of existing floor and not having to rip up old and put down a plywood subfloor.
Existing floor is old pine planks with a pine plank subfloor, both which have fairly big damaged areas otherwise we’d lean towards just refinishing.
We are also replacing the baseboard and door mouldings so no issue there.
What do people think about just laying new floor on top of old?

You can certainly do this…but the contractor will have put plywood subfloor on top before laying out the new floor…..you might to shave off radiator legs and bottoms for doors to accommodate the elevation….all doable

FWIW I had a new floor installed in my kitchen a few years ago on top of the original pine sub-floor that I had refinished 40 years earlier that was worn and damaged. The flooring company put down a moisture-resistant layer, a 1/2″ plywood sub-floor, and a 3/4″ oak floor. I’ve had no problems with the new floor.

Ok yeah I was really wondering about installing the new flooring right on top of the old floor so with no new plywood installed on top of old floor to save the cost.
Would that work?.

The previous owners of our home laid cheeseball engineered oak directly over our original inlaid floors in pristine condition (go figure!) some time in the late 90s, and when we moved in 15 years later at least, engineered oak was in great condition with no issues from being overlaid. That didn’t stop us from ripping the oak out lol.
As long as the floors you’re going to cover are in decent shape as far as being level and sound, I don’t see an issue.

I guess you could skip the plywood layer but expect problems down the line. My understanding is that adding plywood helps the new floor lie perfectly flat and straight, adds stability, and — importantly in these old houses — eliminates squeaks. Noise may not seem like a big deal in the abstract but when every late night visit to the bathroom wakes your partner, you’ll rue the day….

How big are the damaged areas and how many are there? We have pretty wonky old pine subfloors we refinished and we get so many compliments on them. If you’ve got a few holes, I would just patch the holes. Also a fair amount of the floors can be covered by rugs anyway. It will save you a bundle. I’d be even less inclined to rip out original baseboards and door moldings. That can give a sad, vandalized look to a property and lower resale value.

We did this, and no issues several years later. Took deck screws to the old floor to eliminate squeaks – it was damaged, creaky, and had major gaps. Then did a sound absorbing, glue down installation of a nice engineered floor. Very happy with results.

I would be very careful about the implications of changing the floor level when you add another layer. If you are doing all rooms the same time that helps avoid awkward level changes between rooms. But there can be issues where you come to existing stairs, fireplaces, doors, radiators, etc. The “right” way to do it would be to remove everything and put down a new subfloor and finish floor. That would also provide the opportunity to level any sagging floors.

MDR is correct about the right way to do this and that’s what the floor company I used recommended. However, I had the new floor installed over the old to save money and don’t find the difference in floor level at all objectionable, possibly because my floor was pretty close to level to start.

This is ok if done by a professional and reliable company. unfortunately you may end up paying a premium for a company who really knows how to do it the right way
