Kitchen Relocation?

Relocating a kitchen in a Park Slope prewar is definitely doable—especially since other units, including the one below you, already have the layout you want—but it’s usually one of the pricier types of NYC renovations. Most people spend $35k–$70k+ once plumbing moves, electrical upgrades, permits, and architect filings are included. Using Ikea boxes with nicer fronts can keep cabinetry costs down, but the real expenses come from trades and DOB requirements. If the new kitchen location is close to existing plumbing, you’ll likely land on the lower end; longer runs or older electrical panels push it higher. A contractor familiar with prewar buildings and a filing architect are almost always needed.

My partner and I have an offer out on an Edwardian left right in Park Slope with a poor layout. The apartment is beautiful, but the kitchen is in a small room in the back with the bedroom and we’d really like to relocate it to the middle of the apartment for a more functions layout. Most apartments in the building have been renovated and have this layout already, so we believe approval is likely. Additionally, the apartment below specifically has this layout, so we’re optimistic the necessary connections are nearby.

Realistically, what are we looking at for costs? We are thinking through the right mix of spend and considering ikea cabinet boxes with upgraded fronts for somewhere like semihandmade etc. to reduce some costs. Mostly concerned about things we have no experience with like permitting and plumbing / electrical work. Would love to hear costs experience and any contractor recs for quotes!

You’re probably looking at two or three days for a plumber to do the rough in and then return to hook up the fixtures. Maybe ballpark $4000 or so for that including parts and labor. (Presumably, hopefully, the main stack and water supply lines are already in place where you need them since the other apartment moved their kitchen.) If you use a general contractor, this will all be part of the total cost. Possible you could go without a designer, but one could improve the fit and finish (and avoid costly errors) also for not much extra cost. It’s often the case buildings have contractors who work often there and know the lay of the land and can do it cheaper and faster than someone else. (I know of at least two buildings where that’s the case.) The super and your neighbors may have recs. Tip the super well this holiday period. Also bear in mind (from your description) the “bedroom” you are describing was originally the dining room, next to the kitchen. The bedrooms were in the middle of the unit. The double parlor was in the front, with another flex bedroom/office/etc. off to the side. (Sometimes the bath was off the kitchen, sometimes near the bedrooms.)

Reach out to the downstairs neighbor and find out specifically what they did, who they used, what they paid, etc. They’ve been there, they’ve done that.
