cate is correct in that the installers supply. i am not exactly sure of the markup but thinking back to the 1980’s when i actually worked for a siding and window installer, was that whatever the window cost, the installer marked it up 100% or doubled the price of the window and that was what they got for installation. If you can find a way to make the money work for the right person, you can probably get this done. it is not rocket science but things do occasionally go wrong (during college in the late 1980s i worked for an installer and drove around southeastern NC servicing windows the installers screwed up) and you might not want a less experienced person installing high-end windows. Cate is correct that people would rather work one job that keeps them busy for 2 or 3 weeks as opposed to bouncing around doing a day here a day there (wait until the economy tanks and you will find good people willing to do smaller jobs).

I am not sure how high your house is, but if it were say three floors above ground (english basement and two above that), an experienced person with an experienced helper should be able to have the rear wall done in a day (my smaller brick queens house with ten windows on the front and back above the actual basement level took a buddy of mine with a highly skilled installer/helper backing him up one day to do; I was the gopher running around cleaning up; this was a rushed job with lower end windows; i would not expect people to handle high-end product this way and when those of us who work like this rush, we do damage things and get injured).

we never worked off a scaffold. Most windows are done from the inside by removing the window stop and pulling the old one out (or the sashes and parting rail in old wood windows) and installing the new against the exterior stop and shimming it square and screwing to the old wood frame. Capping is done from the outside off a ladder.

in so far as pointing some of the brick. if your brick is in good condition, i would not have the window installers point it. these are two different trades and those of us who really do not want to do masonry work often do sloppy masonry work and it shows (been there, done that). also, note that you could have lime mortar in there and if it is and somebody uses the new type N, it could damage the bricks. if you don’t care about the appearance of the brick, by all means, ask the window guy to do it.

Even though i have installed and repaired hundreds of windows including a few replacement windows here in NYC and have changed dozens of insulated glass units in the past twenty-five years, I am not putting myself forth for this work. I now perform “maintenance inspections” for homeowners. If a homeowner has problem windows (and roofs and other things) that i think can be repaired (even by a willing homeowner who is handy), I spend time talking about windows (and whatever else; for some reason i know a lot about doors and finishes as well) and i am current on all of this in so far as the mass-produced replacement windows go (their functionality has not changed much since 1980 and many times the windows people want to service date back to the late 80’s or early 90’s; it is the same stuff i worked on back then).

Know this: i got called during covid by a man in Brooklyn (who found me here) who told me a window maintenance company told him all the balances had to be changed in his windows to the tune of nearly 3k. I walked in and told him “your balances have to be adjusted”. He helped me as i spent a long afternoon adjusting and lubricating his balances and when i was done, every window worked and he paid me about 1/3 of what the other guys wanted and both of us were very happy. do your homework with replacement windows. If budget is a concern, look at what can be maintained as opposed to being replaced.

If I already have the windows, can Ifind a contractor who specializes in installing windows into the back brick wall of an old brownstone – to replace the old windows (there would be no need to cut the openings wider)? The bricks may need some pointing and the opening may need new wood frames built (?) and, obviously, the new windows will need new flashing. Hoping to find someone who has experience and references for installing windows in old houses. Thanks.

In my experience, the outfits who specialize in windows also supply them, but any contractor who knows what they are doing can install windows, including those who specialize in siding and exteriors. The really good, honest, and reliable contractors are typically busy with bigger jobs, however. Unless they are doing the job from the inside, they will need scaffolding also.
