Am I asking for trouble planning on a white painted tin backsplash that matches my kitchen tin ceiling exactly? I’m not a big fan of wiping down all the time and water problems don’t appeal to me, but the tin itself is negligible in cost (under $100 for the 12 feet by 2 feet I’d need for my tiny kitchen) and the only real price would be installation by my time/materials guy. My alternative I guess is subway tiles which are classic in NYC and fine and not pricey, but ho hum and pricier to install. My fridge, sink/faucet and range are stainless steel with some black highlights, the dishwasher is hidden, it is a one-wall kitchen with a big island, cabinets will be ikea white flat panel and light/white quart type countertops. The local tin place (Standard Tinsmith) can either provide it with some waterproofing but kind of silver, then I’d paint it white in-house, OR just prepainted white and the colors match my existing walls. Would it look terrible if I added a 3″ countertop-stub backsplash and put the tin behind that so it is as much decorative as anything? It is like a lip perpendicular to the countertop in the same material, and is easier to clean than tin or tile I think – but probably would cut up the look Thoughts? Thanks for any feedback or alternative suggestions

I’ve used tin as a backsplash in a couple of my renovations. It’s fine as long as it’s coated. Very easy to install. Just use a clear caulk on seams so water doesn’t get through and you don’t cut yourself on sharp edges.

It is cheap and easy, but I would think more decorative then functional. Go with tile. You want soemthing easy to clean those splatters off of – and anything painted and with indentatations is not going to be as easy as something smooth like tile, glass, etc. And the countertop lip is ugly in most cases.

I think it can be a great idea if, like most things, it suits the overall design and is installed right. I’ve also seen this installed as an accent and agree it looks great. If done in conjunction with a backsplash, I’d rest it on top, not behind it to minimize the opportunity for water/moisture to wick behind the backsplash. There are small “J” track edge moldings to sit the tin panel in so as to finish off the lower edge, and the upper edge meeting the cabinets, can be the same or a small wood molding, subltle, to match the cabinets. I would NOT paint this myself. Even if sprayed well, given the texture of the surface it is likely to look like you brought your car to Maaco for a paint job. Be certain the material is resistant to moisture, wont rust and you like it as is, or skip the whole idea. Hope this helps! Matt R www.nyc-hs.com

So in the end we went with tin backsplash and it really works. It’s a bit showy but also ties together the traditional elements of our kitchen (tin ceilings, traditional white flat panel cabinets albeit from IKEA, hardwood floors) with the stainless steel appliances, we left the tin unpainted and shiny but did waterproof it, it turned out awesome. Hopefully this post will include a picture, I’ve been having problems posting pics since brownstoner “upgraded” a while back.
