Cate cannot recommend anyone so she is offering up some parameters. i can give you some names but you have to suffer my parameters first.

in so far as the “generations” part. be aware that in searching for contractors for specialized trades, i have in recent years tried to rely on the “in business for generations” thing but what i am learning is, the old owners are often selling out to someone unrelated, often someone who had worked for them, and the difference is apparent during the initial phone call. The in business for generations thing worked well when the father knew what he was doing and passed it to his son who wanted to do the job and was willing to learn everything he could. Nowadays, people want the money from the job but they are only willing to learn the bare minimum and are not really studying to become expert (i mean going home at night and reading about what they learn during the day; it is not happening and it is apparent).

If you cannot find older, father-to-son (or daughter, it happens more than we think) companies, formal education in a trade will suffice and may even be better than hand-me-down knowledge (because it breaks bad habits or ill-formed beliefs or fills in gaps in the knowledge). that education can come from the electrician’s union (local 3 for example) or trade schools.

whomever you choose, be sure they are conversant in the task. you want to be able to pose potential challenges to the tradesperson and that person should understand those challenges right away and be able to discuss how to work around them. it should not be regarded as a fault if they admit they have not done something before but say they are willing to talk to the manufacturer or someone who knows more than they do. Also, it does not matter if english is not their first language. If they are who they say they are and they have been doing this for at least the 10 years it takes to really master something while learning a language, they will understand your concerns and they will have answers for you. Being able to converse with a customer this way comes with experience. If they cannot do it, do not make the mistake of thinking that it is only a matter of language (when it is a lack of experience).

any good electrician should be able to read the product details that come with that charging system and if they do not understand something they should be able to pick up the phone and call tesla’s tech team and ask them the questions and figure this out. (we don’t want egos on projects that can destroy expensive items; any professional who is serious about their trade should be willing to discuss things with someone who knows more than they do).

Ceriello Electric is at the top of the game. the owner has stepped back a little but i have worked alongside his electricians and they are careful;

Midway electric in yonkers will come to NYC. maybe not for a small job. the original owner passed away a couple years ago and ran that company right up until the end (at like 94). his son now runs it.

I want to say Tom Munetz Electric. but i am getting a sense that he is not as willing to come to the city anymore and may sub it out. But Tom is a great guy and my customers love him.

I do not think having a storefront really matters in this sort of thing. Electricians are required to have a storefront as part of holding a license (which is why you might walk by an unrelated business and see an electrician’s sign in the window). I can tell you this, a lot of people do this sort of thing under other people’s licenses and that could be bad. to avoid this arrangement, call a company that has a big web presence and a van with the name and license number plastered all over the side (the more us in the building services industry advertise, the less we can cheat; we leave ourselves open). short of this, check that the license is valid and if I were really concerned i might go on the NY DOS website and see who owns the business and what address they use (all this can be done on the web). (those “plumbers” who blew up the building on 2nd and st marks a decade ago and are now sitting in jail, they were working under someone else’s license; be aware the owner of the building is sitting in jail with them).

When you get experienced in this, you can tell in the first one minute of a phone call if someone is who they say they are and you will be able to decide if the conversation should go no further. A few months back i was talking to my mom (who worked as an HR director for a LI property owner/manager) and i asked her how she as a woman dealt with men (and their nonsense) in this environment and she told me “at first it was hard, but after a while i could figure out who was who and how they were going to treat me (as a woman) and I quickly learned not to waste time with them; the conversation simply went no further.” There is a message here for men as well.

I would start by calling some electricians who are licensed and have been in business for generations with a storefront. See if they have experience with this.
