How thick is the wood on an old parquet floor please? Circa 1900.

Thanks for the answers. I am asking because as a possible feature to a renovation we want to put in a parquet floor. We have refinished subflooring, right now. It’s maybe 1/2 in thick, has a few bouncy boards, and it is splintery. We do not likenthe butcher block look of oak planks. I’m concerned about the weight of a thick new floor too.

FWIW a couple of years ago we put 1/2″ plywood and 3/4″ oak over the refinished subfloor in our kitchen that had become more than shabby after many years of use. The added weight hasn’t been a problem.

I’m agreeing with the 1/4″ measurement. I had some repair work done by Carlos Wood Floors (http://www.carloswoodfloors) when I removed my radiators a few years ago at my Brooklyn Brownstone. We had some loose pieces which were about that thick. Carlos and his crew are extremely Brownstone floor knowledgable – if you need any work done. I’m attaching photos of their repair work – they matched the existing border design perfectly. It’s a fact that the wood is 5/16″ when new. You can still buy the exact same wood – but like I said regarding old wood, it depends how much it was sanded and every building will be different.
