Gas Fireplace Needs A Lot of Love

See pictures attached. We have one fireplace in the dining room of our Ditmas Park home & it has been in this condition since the 1970’s. The mantel went missing 30+ yrs ago and a china cabinet has been in front of it and sold with the house, owner to owner, since. We recently got rid of the china cabinet and want to bring this fireplace back to life. Where do we start?! Seriously we have No idea where to start.
Can we hire someone to figure this out for us? Or is it manageable as a DIY? So I would add to Cate’s list of suppliers, Lesperance TIle Works/Rock City Falls. I am a specialist in this type of work and suspect that there was a brick firebox that would isolate the heat from the back area where the cast iron pipe is.. There also would have been a cast iron fireback that stood between the fire and the brick. If you look at the tile for penertrations, you will see where the gas pipe came up (if it was a gas fireplace). No matter, there are modern appliances that can be installed in this space following the building codes. Valor is one maker that has some suitable units that would fill the space of the firebox. With that, your mission is to have a chimney connection, bring in a gas line, and build an enclosure for the gas appliance. With the dimensions of the appliance, you can work with a builder that can frame out the space for the appliance, and based on the location of the side boards coming down, you will have the answer to the space where facade tiles will go. The space above the firebox that is framed in wood, was likely a mirror… the mantle shelf sits below the mirror and there is a pair of ‘legs’ to bring the whole thing down to the tiled hearth pad.

I am currently working on this type of project where their intention is to set the fireplace up for wood fires… I have discouraged that because a) the pattern of use was coal fire which are much hotter, less smoke… and b) the chimney would need to be relined.

Incidentally, and I am recommending this, but there are gas units out there now that do not require venting. They are generally lower btu… be advised that the burning of gas without a vent is going to put humidity into the house… I am guessing that the units are tested to be safe… they say it is not to be used in a bedroom, and you will have to put in a CO monitor. Check with your building codes, but it is and option. It is a nice place to put a heat source… the houses of this period were designed with that in mind.

A firebox is the interior of the fireplace and includes a fireproof wall, usually made of brick. A brick chimney usually runs all the way up through the roof, although it’s possible there was a different arrangement here because it’s a fairly late gas fireplace. If someone removed a portion of the chimney on the left but left in place brick above it running through to the roof, there could be potential for the unsupported brick above it to collapse. You might want to have a chimney person look at that too.

Great tile and luckily part of the surround is still there. Do you know what it looked like originally? If not, are there similar houses nearby that may have the same fireplace? If so, you can take photos and measurements and commission an exact copy. Maybe the blank area held tile or a metal hood? Check in the cellar or attic for spare parts. A cabinet maker should be able to handle the wood part. American Restoration Tile in Arkansas (or Pewabic, etc., depending on what was there originally) may be able to reproduce or provide hard to find tile, if needed. The condition of the firebox is puzzling. At the right is a brick wall, which I would expect. At the left is plaster and lathe — the back of the adjoining wall. There is a plumbing waste pipe running through it as well as electrical wiring. Waste pipe looks reasonably old, perhaps ’30s or ’40s but I don’t know. Maybe someone demolished part of the fireplace and removed a brick wall to gain access to mechanicals for a repair? (Perhaps the interior had already been exposed before the new wiring went through?) Probably you can rebuild the brick with the plumbing pipe still there, but I don’t know about electrical lines — looks inconvenient, dangerous , and not to code to combine. You could consult with a chimney expert to get their opinion re the brick wall and plumbing waste, and then with an electrician re the feasibility and expense of relocating the lines. Building a firebox, running electricity or installing plumbing including black gas pipe are all jobs that should be handled by professionals. In any case, even if you don’t install a working gas fireplace, you can restore its appearance to a non working mantel and fireplace.

Thank you. If I can’t get it working then at least I can get the mantel, tile etc. in place so it looks appropriate? Removing it entirely isn’t feasible because the entire room has 5 foot tall wainscoting around it with a top ledge (picture rail, groove in it) So it’s a puzzle 🙂

Personally, I wouldn’t attempt this without hiring a professional. There are so many restrictions currently when it comes to gas — some bureaucratic but others based on sound safety procedures. It looks like the entire back of the fireplace needs to be rebuilt, fire proofed and sealed. Then the gas line needs to be tested and a new gas fire installed. Well, actually, testing the gas line needs to happen first! You have an advantage in that the gas line is already present (otherwise this would likely be a non starter) but you should still be prepared to fail to secure the necessary permits.
