Finishing Carpentry
I am a contractor (as well as something else). If you find a true finish carpenter, that person should be able to look at drawings or photos of what you want and build and install it no matter what. You are more or less talking about period changes. If you think about this too much without simply finding someone good (even if they work mostly in brownstones or earlier, federal style buildings), you will wreck your head. Communication will be key. Keep in mind, carpenters are not architects.
Maybe look for someone outside the city. Nassau county has a lot of that housing stock, wwi era.

Hello!
I’m looking for someone with expertise in Finishing Carpentry that has experience in Craftsman style/Arts and Crafts Bungalow renovation work. I’m renovating a home in queens and have some pretty specific design wants that go beyond my contractor’s regular work. I’m thinking I want to bring in a specialist. Any recommendations? If you look through some Insider stories on renovation and design on this site, and Brownstone Boys, they will sometimes mention cabinet makers and finish carpenters they used on architect-led renovations. As well, you may find some finish carpenters advertising in Brownstoner Pros, our classified ad section. (I can’t recommend specific people because I work for Brownstoner.) For some projects, you may want a draftsperson or architect to create drawings for the carpenter to follow, or you may want to show the carpenter photos. Jane Powell’s books Bungalow Kitchens (the best), Bungalow Bathrooms (also great), and Bungalow Interior Details have tons of authentic examples of Edwardian and Arts and Crafts interior details. Bungalow Kitchens even has a schematic drawing of a typical built-in dish cupboard/sideboard of the period.
