Fair price for selling original brownstone details (doors, moulding. etc)?

I am planning a gut renovation of a Park Slope brownstone and will be removing a lot of the original details, interior doors, ornate frames/moulding around windows, marble fireplace mantle, etc. Given that most people renovating brownstones seem to want to add missing details I was planning to see if I can sell the pieces I remove, but I don’t have a good sense of what the market price would be. Can anyone help out what ballpark would be reasonable.

the molding around the window (the one with brown shutters) is nice, but i’d be right with the OP on the remaining – can’t stand it. Sounds like he should have many takers though.

Run of the mill is an appropriate idiom. Must have originated with mass production. Usually condition and wood species is more important than the design itself. Still, cheap construction then was better than cheap construction today.

I’ve found pretty close newly made matches to some molding in my kitchen, but it was a real PITA to get it to take stain to match the old wood. Better to reuse original material whenever possible. In any case, I think the OP was writing about something more than strips of molding.

really some victorian moldings are dull some are spectacular, just like the brownstone facades. IMO We don’t need to save them all. curently in two buildings I happen to saved mine which are really great examples and regret missing some pieces. but i had a building with ordinary moldings once and modern looked just as good. I am speaking c. 1890.

I used to believe that, but after looking at curbed San Francisco, and seeing dozens of aesthetic era Victorians being gutted, insides covered in glass and steel, and sold for $10m to soulless 28 year old tech workers, I’m not sure.

Do you have a basement or other storage? Why not store them with the house? We found a few original treasures hidden in our house and I appreciated that someone saved them for the future owners. Just my 2 cents.

You guys are beating a dead horse. The OP has already said, in response to my comment 2 days ago, that he is “very aware of value considerations, and the decision is something we have been agonizing over for years, but in the end we are planning to live in the house for a long time and we are doing the renovation for us, not someone else’s taste”.

Here’s the things I have:
– Marble fireplace mantle and original ornamental iron front. Overall good condition except for some small staining (coffee ring) on the top.
– Ornamental Window Moulding for 4 parlor floor windows about 10 feet tall (2 of the windows with shutters)
– Ornamental Window Moulding for 2 basement floor windows about 5 feet tall (with shutters, not painted.)
– Door moulding for pocket doors (the actual doors are not in great shape, but would give them away if anyone wants them, can be fixed but likely need to be painted )
– Large double doors and ornamental moulding for interior “entry” doors between parlor hallway and living room.
– Shorter partial glass doors (not painted)
– Door moulding for two interior doors (one tall one short)
– Stair railing (from between basement & parlor floor) including ornamental turned pins (not painted)

In general the condition of the moulding is in somewhat varied and some of it has multiple layers of pai nt. Will post pictures in the next couple of days.
Ideally you would bring your contractor (or yourself) to remove the details around July 6th.
