Dip n strip?

My only experience with “dip and strip “ was 50 years ago, so this may or may not be relevant. There were nice oak kitchen chairs left in my house when I bought it. I had them dip stripped, finished the with Antique Oil Finish, and had the seats upholstered. Shortly after starting to use them the backs snapped off. The stripping process had completely ruined their structural integrity. This wasn’t at a glued joint— the wood just crumbled. Maybe the process is done better now.

Looking to get about 40 shutters of various sizes (for all front windows of 4 story home), stripped and refinished.

I found Dip n Strip, but they’re in NJ. Happy to get any personal experience stories. Do they just skip and then you need to get them sanded and refinished?

Any other recommendations, for amother similar service, especially if in Brooklyn? Or even “a guy” you’ve used, who can do it manually?

Not sure if they’re still around, but I used Park Slope Strippers in the past. They did pickup and drop off as well.

I think park slope strippers was a guy on long island who had another company under the same name. they ran a truck into the city to pick stuff up and work on it in Holbrook. I think he aged out during covid.

i just recalled this only now, i have his former employee’s contact information as 718-845-9320. his name is Jones. He knows what he is doing (i have met him) but i have not spoken to him in a couple of years now and not sure what he is up to. he lives in queens. i don’t believe he was running an actual business in the sense he had insurance but he was seeking work.

i send people to dip and strip for doors and they are pleased. also, they put them in a tank which is faster and easier than doing them on a bench by brushing stripper on. You have to get them there though, i think. that is the downside i hear people say.

Dip n Strip in NJ is known for chemically stripping paint, but you’ll still need to handle sanding and refinishing separately—either DIY or by hiring someone. For Brooklyn, try Tri-State Striping or The Strip Joint NYC—both offer similar services and may coordinate refinishing too. this is something i heard years ago about dipping shutters: the chemical process will soften the glue and they have to be reglued. i am not sure if this is true or not. Maybe Colonialrevival can add to this –

i would definitely put the question to Dip ‘n Strip.

Be careful asking hardware stores and other businesses for this sort of talent – or “guys” or “handy persons”. as it is, most people doing this are in the lower pay range but unskilled people damage the wood with sharp instruments and will leave scratches and torn wood (from sanding across the grain) for the owner to deal with. i see it all the time and i have had to fix my share of it.
