Crown Moulding

I have a small 5 family apartment building in the bronx. I would like to make some small changes in order to up the buildings character and value. I’d like to install some crown moulding in the vacant apartment. A contractor has recommended PVC moulding. Does anyone have any experience with this material. I only know of using wood.

What Rick said about conforming to older walls. They look fine once caulked and painted.

Poly or foam moldings look nice once caulked and painted. They are a good choice on older homes because they will bend and move, making them easier to install than solid wood crowns.

Amazon has many patterns of poly crown molding, but I don’t know if they’re capable of packing it so that it doesn’t get broken in shipping. The two 8′ lengths of narrow rope molding I ordered to add to my hexagonally modified medallion arrive broken in a flimsy box. That was not a problem, since I needed to cut it into <2' lengths, but it would be a major concern otherwise.

I think it’s actually polyurethane foam. The only experience I have with it is narrow rope molding I used to finish off an original plaster medallion in my house that a previous owner had trimmed to fit under a large hexagonal light fixture base plus one replacement medallion
. It was easy to work with and IMO looks good. In the first photo only the off-white outer trim is polyurethane; the rest is original plaster. The second photo is of a new polyurethane medallion I used to replace a badly damaged original in a hallway [Medallion, Fnt](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s3/:brownstoner:9K1r:medallionfnt.parlor.jpg.jpg) [Medallion, Hall](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s3/:brownstoner:VJLG:medallionhall.jpg.jpg) Of course crown moulding is much wider but carefully installed, caulked, primed, and painted I think it would look as good as wood or plaster
