bad idea. like others said, this is a bad idea. get a broker, let the tenant pay the commission and by the time you come back, you may have an application or two waiting for you.

Hi, we are looking to rent out apartment in our house. We will be away on vacation for two weeks and during this time asked our relative to show the apartment and if necessary take applications, check the credit and proceed with the paperwork. How to ensure that this is legitimate and that the tenants-to-be will not think it is some sort of a scam since they will not see the owners. I can leave a form of id or check book or affidavit with the relative. Does it sound reasonable? Or I suppose to transfer to him “power of attorney”? Obviously the relative has the physical access to the apartment.

Best would be wait until you get back because you want the final word on who’s going to be sharing your house with you. Renters don’t care if they see the owners. But you should see the renters. If you don’t make the time to take care of these things yourself now, you’ll setting yourself up for more headaches down the line.

90% of managing tenants is screening them going in. 90% of screening your tenants is experiencing them first hand. Leaving this to a relative is madness.

Agree with above. If you don’t want to wait, give the listing to a broker, who will have someone teed up for you to meet when you return. If you want to do it yourself, do it yourself. Not only is what you propose a bit confusing to prospective tenants, but as the owner, I would be wary of having a non-professional essentially represent me. Whatever your relative says may be taken as a representation of some kind. You don’t want to be in the position where you relative said something you have to backtrack from, or worse, something that may be actionable.
