Required notices in building?

We have owned a 4-unit rental building for about 7 years. When we bought it the owner had several metal signs posted in the vestibule – “key to heating system lock is located at” and a notice that smoke alarms are required in apartments, plus a yellow card “certificate of inspection visits” in a glass-fronted frame. We recently took them down to paint the walls as part of a renovation. (and have never had an inspection visit). Are we required to put them back up? We want to replace them if we are, as these are marked up with the old owner’s name crossed out etc…but I haven’t been able to find new ones at the big-box hardware stores, and have found no information about the requirements on HPD or DOB’s websites. Anyone know the current requirements and where we can find replacement signs? Thanks so much.

Yes, you are required to put them back up (and some of them are required to be posted at specific heights, in specific locations). Toss that old inspection certificate at your peril—it doesn’t matter that the previous owner’s name is on it, or that you’ve never had an inspection. Among the required signs, most by HPD, some by FDNY, are: Certificate of Inspection, HPD Building Registration, Fire Safety, Sprinkler Flow Test, Access to Heating System, CO and Smoke Alarms, etc.
