User request: birds in the bathroom vent?

Someone has asked for help with chirping birds behind their bathroom vent. So far, we haven’t found someone who can help. Any suggestions? Here’s what they wrote to us:

>I’m looking for someone to take a look at the vent/fan in my bathroom. It sounds like there are birds in it — probably not right behind the fan, but I can hear them chirping and fluttering in there. I’m on the second floor of a three-floor co-op in Bay Ridge and I’m hoping to spend no more than $200 to get this handled, but I have no idea what expected costs are for something like this (or what work actually needs to be done, for that matter). It’s not urgent but I would like to get this handled in the next couple weeks or so. Thanks!

“Yes, because all bathroom exhausts vent to the roof.” …..Uh, no try again. In fact, most are on the back wall, where there is no danger of leaks from roof penetrations. You need to know where these are. I DIY’s it last year, couldn’t find a handyman, so just bought a ladder and slapped another vent grate on there. Easy peasy.

There could be birds in the vent or they could be hanging out on the roof near the vent, and the sound is traveling. When we had birds in our attic (we could hear them over our heads and also see them flying outside nearby), we called an exterminator. He identified the point of entry standing on the ground in the yard just by looking, and called in his handymen to close it up (they had to reach over the side of the roof to do it). He also sprayed against mites just in case. They were gone and have never come back!

Some do vent out the side of the building. If so and there’s no screen could certanly be birds in it. Less likely if it vents vertically through the roof. If that’s the case, try using a simple plumbers snake or an electricians “fishtail” to knock the nest out. Is it really doing any damage though anyway????? Probably chicks in it. They’ll abandon the nest after the chicks leave.
