Electric Heat Pump Water Heater
I am soon going to need to replace my hot water heater and am interested in switch from gas to electric (I have solar panels and want to reduce the carbon footprint of the house). Electric Heat Pump water heaters sound like great technology, but seem to be ideal in warmer climates. It would be great to hear from anyone who has installed one or looked into it.

Regarding: “filing a plumbing application to cap and remove a gas fixture has been quite simple” let me add to that. Yes. You are right. Filing is easy. The rest is not. Starting with the fact, that gas meter can be shut only by utility company. And will be open only after getting ok from DOB. All gas lines must be tested and inspected. DOB plumbing inspector will be witnessing the test and inspect supports, materials, methods of installation, and other things, I’m not going to list them all. Good plumber will explain you all issues in advance. Some will hold it to be pointed out by inspector. DOB approach now, is , they are not a quality control operation, so they started issuing violations to the owners for issues discovered during inspections. That can lead to all gas lines replacement and expensive boiler work as well, if you happen to have gas boiler. You will need to legalize illegal installations. I can continue, but that’s enough to debunk statement of simple job. In today’s environment, nothing is easy about gas work.

We’ve used them in a couple of Passive House renovations, and the owners have been very satisfied with them. In deference to Mr. Petri, in our recent experience, filing a plumbing application to cap and remove a gas fixture has been quite simple, notwithstanding any issues related to testing. I’m not sure, but it may even be possible for a plumber to do it as an LAA, saving some time and money.

I’ll add to Mr. Petri’s remark. The electrical permit will be a breeze, while the gas permit will much more likely be a hassle. I wonder if it might be possible to leave th gas water heater in place and add the electric one.

If you do so legally, it is a process. You need to file two permits: One Gas Permit through a Licensed Master Plumber to Cap and Remove the Gas Line which includes testing the other appliances on it. You then have to pull an Electric Permit for the Water Heater.

I have 2 accelera 300 , one newer and one older model
They work nicely and remove moisture from the cellar as a side effect.
They certainly work better when placed in a hot garage, but hey – it’s not really that bad. And there is a fan and compressor noise in some models. The never Accelera is comparatively quiet and I can’t really hear the compressor
The best solution would probably be one solar thermal tank and one heat pump water heater as backup.
