Drain Tank
Hey forum,
So our 8 family walkup has a drain in the basement that will backup every once in awhile and brown/black water will come into the basement. It’s a huge pain as our floors are NOT sloped towards drain and well it’s poopy water. I’m wondering if anyone has any ideas to build a small retaining wall around the drain or some kind of tank alternative to at least keep the water in one place. Any suggestions are appreciated.

A plumber should be able to help determine the problem. It might be as simple as a partially clogged sewer line. Or it might be due to an inability of the system to handle the flow during heavy rain storms – i.e. a rear yard that has no drainage (too much concrete or paving). Keep in mind that a back flow preventer will stop excess sewage/water at its location but that the flow (if especially heavy) can back up to the next highest outlet – a toilet on the floor above, a rear yard drain, etc.

It’s really a critical situation. Sewage or poopy water backing up once in awhile will be be really frustrating and disgusting. Last year my cousin had the same situation after a heavy rain. Sewage water started backing up in her basement. I came across an article which had few important tips and ideas to prevent backing up of water. It helped her a lot. http://www.brothersplumbing.ca/blog/water-valves/backwater-valves-essential/ . You can also refer this. Hope you find it useful.

You should seek the help oh drain clearance guy.. Building retaining wall or tank will be difficult and temporary. One of the best automated solution to prevent the basement drain back-up is ‘backwater valves’ or ‘back flow preventers ‘ .

Yes, even I think you should call in a drain clearance guy first .

I’d call in a drain clearance guy first. Clean the drain out & be sure the lead plug is well seated.
