Cover vent pipes on roof?

We have 3 cast iron plumbing vent pipes on the roof that are coming up from kitchen and bathrooms. They are completely uncovered, just 6” open pipe on top.
I’ve read some people say to put a stainless steel rain cap on it so rain/animals don’t get in, some people say leave it totally open to be able for air to flow as freely as possible, some say just cover with a scrap of window screen material, some say not to do that because snow can pile on it and block it.
Anyone got advice on this? Thanks!

i always wondered if something did go down one of those pipes if it would clog the works. i mean it is a straight shot right down, no?

my grandparents once had a squirrel fall down the fire place chimney. chewed up all of the molding around the windows trying to get out.

A mushroom cap allows airflow without the chance of anything falling inside. I once had a bird enter a kitchen range ventilation hood, dropped down the pipe all the way to the 2nd floor kitchen, tenants removed the screen, opened up the damper and grabbed it out. I had two 90 degree elbows up on the roof, so water couldn’t enter, but i never thought a bird would fly up inside.

I think the possibility of snow blocking a screened vent, as mentioned by an earlier poster, is a good reason not to use a mesh screen. FWIW I’ve never had one of my plumbing stack vents blocked in 45 years of brownstone ownership and, IF that were to happen, the smell of sewer gas would quickly alert me that I had to go up to my roof to check.

i have been thinking about this since it appeared and have wondered why i have never seen a screen on one of these pipes, ever. and it makes all sense to have one; the chances of a branch coming off a tree and landing straight in there are better than winning the power ball.

i did try to google it with no result: could it be that the gasses coming up out of there carry just enough effluent with them that the fear is that over time they might clog a tight mesh screen?

it seems there is always gas coming up; i put my nose over one of those pipes when i was a child and have not forgotten that lesson. perhaps when someone gives the toilet a flush a lot more moisture comes out with that gas, so much so that it would settle on a screen and close it off?

people would have to inspect something like this annually and really, who inspects anything on the roof until they have a leak.

sorry to those who don’t like when i speak when i really don’t know but in buildings a lot of things do get solved by people tossing scenarios on the table and professionals put them o n the table all the time; if i were working in a building and this were a concern, i would have access to an engineer and would run the question to her and we often find that the suspicions are in the correct direction.

I’d probably be more worried about the problems that a cap or screen could cause than the problems it would solve. Go up on your roof and count how many plumbing vent caps you can spot in the neighborhood. My guess is it’s zero. If you want a cap, I’d just make sure it’s designed for the purpose and doesn’t make your vent non-compliant.

If you’re main concern is critters, I don’t see the harm in adding some wire mesh. But maybe not as fine as window screening. Too easy for that to get blocked by leaves or some such.
