New steam boiler for 3 family?

If you have an old oil boiler, replacing it with a new gas boiler is probably a good idea and your annual fuel costs are likely to be less. I would get a couple more quotes on the boiler replacement, as well as a couple of quotes on doing a repair.

We just had our seasonal boiler service. Our boiler is very old but has always been serviced and runs strong. They have informed that it appears it is not burning correctly and it carbonizing the chamber. They said we most likely need a new boiler. We are having them quote on the cost of a new boiler and installation. How much does a new boiler and installation usually cost? Has anyone else had a similar problem and just had it fixed with out a full replacement? Thanks Brownsters!

You need more info. If by “carbonized” they mean there is soot build-up in the boiler, that in itself signifies nothing (especially if you’re burning oil) as it is a normal by-product of buring the oil which is why you should get the boiler cleaned on an annual basis. The burner should also be adjusted because if it’s not burning the oil properly it will lead to excessive soot.
