What should a family of 4 from Canada do on a day in Brooklyn?

We’ll be coming to NYC in a few weeks, staying in midtown, doing all the usual tourist things. Of course this includes walking over the Brooklyn Bridge to Brooklyn. What should we do while in Brooklyn? There’s all kinds of information on the Internet, walking around Brooklyn Heights to see brownstones and DUMBO to see the old streets and going to Grimaldi’s and Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory seem to the most common recommendations, but I figured I would go straight to the source. 🙂

I agree with the above but have to disagree strongly about Coney Island.  Yes, it has a seedy aspect that is part of its charm as far as I am concerned. It is unlike every other generic amusement area.  Every tourist should ride the Cyclone.  Also, the new Luna Park is quite nice – new rides, etc. Don’t forget about the aquarium!  Also, no visit to Coney Island would be complete without a Nathan’s hot dog!  Go on a Friday night and your guests will adore the fireworks. Don’t worry – it is perfectly safe. Your visitors might also enjoy walking toward Brighton where the boardwalk becomes a bit more gentrified and they can view a bit of Russian culture. along the way.  I would also recommend pizza and ices at L & B Spumoni Gardens – just a short ride away from Coney Island.  Not fancy but you can sit outside and eat or if you prefer, there is a full service restaurant as well.

My Canadian relatives would probably agree with the first two answers here — and I second seediness of Coney Island. When you go to the Botanic Gardens/Museum/Prospect Park/Grand Army Plaza area, if your legs haven’t dropped off from walking around the Heights and the Promenade, you might consider a ride on the carousel in the Park. Or rent some bikes and take the tour that way.If you decide to take in an evening movie or theater or dance show at the Brooklyn Academy of Music — aka BAM — you could stroll around Fort Greene — lots of good restaurants.

Coney Island is seedy, but its seedy in a wonderful way. I took a young visitor from Sweden to Coney Island for a long day on the rides and the boardwalk and it was a success. Many tourists never see the seaside aspect of New York City, and Coney Island is a surprise.

skip grimaldi’s. Just bunch of tourist’s waiting on line for pizza. Waste of time.Depending on how much time wanting to spend — walk thru the heights/down the promenade – and maybe take ferry to Governor’s Island (if saturday or sunday) — or look into new ferry service that goes up east river.If have more time — then take kids to Coney Island (end of line of subways).
