Strange odor after plumbing repair?

The maintenance guys replaced a plumbing pipe and had to break through the wall in the small spare bedroom to do so….well over a year ago. Ever since there has been a strong construction type odor in that room and there also seems to be much more humidity than before. Of course when I asked them to check it out, they just shrugged their shoulders. I can’t even use this room any more because of the odor. Any ideas what could be causing this?

Thank you so much for responding. I think you hit the nail on the head. When the maintenance guys didn’t show up for a scheduled appointment on Monday, I sent the manager a fax telling him exactly what you said and informing him that I was going to get my own plumber in to assess the situation since they couldn’t figure it out. The following day, the maintenance supervisor showed up at my door and assured me there was absolutely no chance there were any venting issues from when they replaced the risers and said he couldn’t detect the odor I’ve been complaining about. The manager called immediately afterwards to let me know he scheduled an outside plumber to come in to assess the situation and there was no need for me to call my plumber. The funny thing is the odor has mysteriously disappeared…first time in 2-1/2 years…and the plumber they contacted is scheduled to be here tomorrow. Is it possible that after they received my written complaint telling them exactly what was wrong, they fixed the venting situation and are now pretending it never existed to protect themselves? strange construction odor.. like sulfur? you’ve got an open vent somehere..  needs to be plumbed to roof/outside, and/or capped.
