HATE the new site!

Ok, I’m not sure when this happened as I’ve been sick the last two weeks, but THIS SITE SUCKS! AND I just had to re-register which means all the posts from the past are not there/linked and I will have to fill out about me again (and it says I just signed up not that I signed up way back in 2004 when I did). I don’t care about this so much for me, but for everyone?? Seems to be a major problem. Also, the navigation and layout doesn’t fit on my screen anymore and it just looks like crap plus ads. This is a bummer…I’m sure there are reasons for it, but Brownstoner, I think you made a mistake… I’m sorry! 🙁

Afa design is considered, it’s certainly cleaner, and it loads much faster, for which serious kudos. So in general, a big step forward. > Sorry that people have to re-register but we couldn’t get around it. As a very long time IT person, that answer is, to put it charitably, disingenuous. OBVIOUSLY the previous info was on a database somewhere. Equally obviously, the new info is on a database. Converting may have been a pain, and many have been EXPENSIVE (which is what I think the issue is) but if I told my (non-web, real database, ) clients ‘I can’t move your data’, I’d be out of a job. And ‘known glitch in IE’….give me a break! IE is still what, 70%+ of browser use and your designers can’t design for it? (see comment about job above.) Personally, I design always for IE, then do cross-browser mods as needed. It’s not that hard. And I do more more complex stuff than what’s on a typical website. But as will almost all redesigns, it uses more real estate…hence more scrolling (and, be honest, having ALL posts truncated with a “more” tag is just a way to double the clicks). For instance, in the Forum, why are the icons on the left so HUGE? You could have a lot more text if they were in-line. Etc etc, but then I’m not cutting edge and value functionality over form.

I don’t hate the new version but it’s still very glitchey. I have to run IE at work and I’ve had a lot of problems seeing the comments, posting, etc… At home I use Chrome and everything is perfect but many of us that work in offices have to use IE and I’m sure that some are having issues as well. I too am a little dismayed as my posting history is gone and I’ve been on Brownstoner since the beginning. In the end I’ll adapt and Jon had to do what he had to do so I support him. It’s his site, we are just vistors.

I agree, a few glitches but some seem to be getting ironed out. I do like the “Follow” capability. I’m wondering if the Http/Https issue has been resolved — originally, I was getting a popup that said insert username and password and all of this will not be secure, so I ignored it, didn’t put in user/password info. Now I don’t seem to be getting that popup — has it been taken care of? And we’ll eventually get used to the white space, I think, though it would be nice if the type could be LARGER. Is that something we can adjust on our end?

I never complained…I loved the site! 🙂 And as a former web person I understand the need to switch platforms…I just don’t like this one. WordPress smurdpress. I didn’t say it was a strange platform, just an ugly one that for me isn’t as user friendly. It seems all about white space and ads. But I do feel for you and didn’t mean my post to make things worse…I was just shocked to come back to this.

Funny how all anyone could do when the old site was up was complain about it and now that it’s gone everyone misses it! The technology platform the old site was built on was ancient and was discontinued last fall. We rebuilt the site on WordPress, which is THE standard for blogs now, hardly some strange platform. There are obviously some technical issues we’re still working through but that’s inevitable. Sorry that people have to re-register but we couldn’t get around it.
