Replacement of window gates with those that can swing open

Chase Bank required this of me in 2013\. They recommended Ricardo at Piccolo Iron Work who I was happy with and has done other jobs for me subsequently. He removed removed the existing bars, modified them back at his shop (adding hinges and locking mechanism) and reinstalled them.

I need to replace just the bars of just one of my bedroom windows with the type that swing open and closed. It’s a bank demand and I need it to happen quickly. Do you have any recommendations? I contacted ‘Perfect Gates’ which had Yelp reviews (and two different names) but the experience was anonymous – I received a quote with a picture of something else, and they never replied to me. Also I was curious if it’s possible for the existing to be re-used to swing open of it totally new ones are required. Would love some recommendations. I might also ask them to fix my poorly-closing front door gate. Thanks!

I am assuming that you have the metal accordion type at your window. These are illegal. I had to replace mine 10 years ago with the legal type, that opens with just one hand so that children and the elderly can escape in a fire. They are lighter than the accordion ones. My locksmith at the time also handled the window grill replacement. You might try a reputable locksmith. Alternatively, one contractor recommended http://www.nationalmetalenclosures.com/ – a company on Atlantic Avenue, when I was discussing this issue with him recently. I haven’t used them myself but this contractor uses them regularly.

Hi tm07, I’m not sure what a ‘metal accordian type’ is. Here’s a picture.

Why don’t you just cut away the bottom half of the bars. That should satisfy the bank if their concern is emergency egress. If you decide that you want the bars back, you can install a swingout gate after the purchase.

Any iron worker, welder can handle this for you. I would fine the closest shop near you and meet with them and explain your needs. Calling large companies on the phone to do a small job like this can be difficult. Find a small shop near you.

What Rick said…our insurance company required us to do this so we had Boro Iron (??) come and do it. Think it was $500 – $600 and they did it on the spot.

I agree with the others. You have a much more modern grate that can easily be converted to swing out and lock. Mine was from the 1970’s.I paid $350 for the new grate, which was installed inside the window back in 2004\.
