Bathroom floor

Hi, I am thinking of using 2″ white carrera marble hexagons to tile a bathroom floor.  This is in an apartment that I will be renting out.  Am I crazy to do this?  Will a marble floor just require too much maintenance? Any suggestions of a different material w/a similar look? Thanks!

I’d use smaller hexagons than the 2″ you mention and medium to dark grey grout. The tile should be honed, not polished of course (matte, not shiny) for safety and upkeep. In my experience marble cleans up more easily than unglazed white ceramic hex tiles, perhaps because the natural color gradations in marble hide color variation that could appear over the years more easily than solid whitish tiles.

Hey everyone, she asked for suggestions! It seems the expense of marble mosaic is not an obstacle; you just want to be practical.  2” hex was popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but encaustic, not so much stone.  The white encaustic looks like marble, you see it a lot around NYC and you may have thought it was marble. Restoration Tile makes it in Arkansas.  I am not sure if this is an installation shot of 2” Hex, or 1,” but they make both (to order.) http://www.restorationtile.com/installations.html Another option is porcelain from Subway Ceramics http://www.subwaytile.com/mosaics_P.shtml for porcelain 2” hex.  You can get that at Home and Stone.  Ask for Gerry. Both these options are extremely durable, lasting as long as the substrate.  They don’t look like the 2” Dall or AO tiles.  They have square edges like marble.  I have cleaned 100 year old floors like these, no problem. it will get dirty, and needs to be sealed every year.  Lots fo grout lines with hex tht also get dirty.  Not a good conbination for rental.  People definitely have them for rentals, but as a homeowner i can barely keep mine looking fresh.

I think your biggest risk is the tenant using a cleaning product not good for the stone – bleach, vinegar, plus you’re supposed to periodically seal the surface. I’d recommend going with ceramic tile.
