A locksmith to AVOID!

wait.. his card was conveniently on the gate?  Reminds me of the rash of broken windshields when a new windshield repair shop opened up nearby.   Personally, in this age of quick googling via cell phones, i would never call a lock smith who’s card happened to be placed on the gate/door/whatever which out of nowhere just broke.

Unfortunately I got an emergency call from a tenant that the entrance gate lock was broken and no one could get in or out of the building. I wasn’t home and didn’t have my usual locksmith’s name and number. It was Sunday anyway and not sure he would have been available. The tenant saw the business card of a locksmith placed on the gate. I had no choice. It was an emergency.

I had to have my handyman come the next day and basically redo the job. Gate didn’t latch, lock was screwed on by the flimsiest of screws – it was dangling – could have been knocked off by a good ram on the gate, among other things. Incredible. And the lousy locksmith charged my tenant over $250 for replacing a simple lock! (Of course the cost was passed on to me). Also used the old cylinder (which was a good idea) but didn’t leave me the new cylinder and key that I was entitled to.

Many of these “professionals” will just grab the lip of the cylinder with a large pair of vice grips and spin it until the set pins break, ruining the entire mechanism.
