Does Verizon have the right to entering my property?
Does Verizon have the right to entering my property to access the backyard utilty pole? I am in Brooklyn (an attached townhouses). So they have to go thru my house. These service is not even for me, it’s for new install for neighbors.

Brokelin: someone living in a house that color wields a gun? I thought they were pacifists.

Once when I rented an apartment decades ago next to a brownstone well known in brownstone Brooklyn for the unique color of paint it was painted in until recent years, the telephone installer came back to my apartment after checking out the pole, and he was shaking like a leaf because he had gone to the pole in my neighbor’s yard, and said homeowner had gone out with a gun drawn on him because he was in his yard. I had never until that point thought about what a dangerous job it was to be a telephone installer/repairman.

They need to get back there for service and repair. I wish phone companies would remove some of the old defunct lines already. They keep adding more lines over old ones. It can get ugly looking at all those extra lines that have been adding up over decades.

For 20 years I have let Verizon into my yard to access the pole. Just recently I was sent a letter to sign requesting access to set up for FIOS. I finally refused as the pole is not even in my yard. They did not believe me and sent out a surveyor from the company they are using to start the FIOS process. The surveyor took two seconds to say the pole is not in your yard! I had been telling Verizon that for 20 years and they would not listen. The pole is in the backyard of the house behind me and they just didn’t want to let Verizon in.

And if your neighbor tried to call 911 because of a health issue or a home invasion but could not do do because their landline was not working since their neighbor would not provide yard access and they could not use their cell, would you blame Verizon for their death or assault?

I am beginning to feel like an old timer here. years ago, before we had all of these other devices and we all connected through a company called NY Bell (the precursor to verizon) everybody just let them into their yard because we all carried that service. But now that some of us (I am in the “us”; I do not subscribe to any verizon product) do not use verizon we do not care if they cannot access the back yard to provide service to others. I am not really sure what to say here. Is it really a benefit to their business or is it really to provide service to someone’s neighbors? I know if I were an 85 year old who never had heard of the internet, did not know what a cell phone was, and had become a verizon subscriber simply because I had once been a regular telephone line subscriber with something called NY Bell, I would really have to consider whether living in the 1960’s was better than the 2,000’s. FYI: I do not like verizon, but that is another story. steve

I absolutely despise Verizon dating back to the time when I called to schedule my move a month hence and take my number with me literally a few doors down on the same block. They cancelled my phone and internet service immediately, the idiots. I spent 3 weeks working my way up the management food chain trying to get them to turn my service back on so I could work, as I always do, from home. If they can turn it off immediately, why could they not turn it back on? But they couldn’t, they insisted. It caused me a lot of stress, a loss of significant work and more. As a result, when they wanted access to my back yard a year or two ago to install FIOS cable, I said no. When I explained why, the tech understood. If they need access to repair a line in my area, I let them in. But to expand their business? No way.

They can access the pole. Just imagine if you were trying to get/fix your service and that the pole were elsewhere on the block, wouldn’t you hope the technician could easily get to it? Letting them in through your home is probably easier than them doing the ladders over fences hopscotch that could cause garden damage. We’ve got the utility pole in our yard on a block of attached brownstones and I think in 5 years they’ve asked to get through maybe twice and have accessed it from other yards other times. It has never been a problem.

Hard to believe anyone can be so petty as to try & stop them. The pole’s in your yard, it’s the breaks. In my case, I’ve found them working once or twice over the years, assume they got in through someone else’s yard.
