Service rec for online rent collection

One of my tenants asked me about paying rent online. He suggested an account transfer but I am hesitent to intrust him with my bank account number. Is there any other services beside Paypal?

When I lived in my last apartment the owner gave e a supply of his deposit slips and I mailed his rent to his bank. That was a long time ago. Now I pay all my bills on line. When I make a payment to someone who doesn’t have a direct pay arrangement with my bank the bank writes a check and mails it early enough so that it arrives by the date I specify.

If you’re both with the same bank its super easy, problem is the big banks are starting to charge outrageous fees if you don’t have big balances.  I would set up a separate account at your bank to receive the funds, sweep it into your personal account and not worry about if they have your account number.     I think it really is a great idea because   1) regular online bill pay where you get a physical rent check is not always so “regular”.  I don’t know if its the post office or what, but these things get lost like clockwork, at least one a year has to be cancelled and re-issued.  (i think its our postal service most of the time)    2) there is no “its in the mail” syndrome, if its not in your account when you expect it, ask tenant for a reference number, otherwise you know your tenant has issues.   The only workaround is if you can avoid the bank fees.

You do make a good point but there is a slight difference – I don’t know about you but I use checks only in very specific transcations which usually goes to a company/person that has a business. I will avoid giving my bank account just like that.

All your checks have your bank account number printed on them. How is giving the tenenats your account number any different than giving someone a check?

Paypal charges 2.9% fee…. The email option is interesting only if the tenant has a chase account. Thanks for the suggestions

some banks allow transfers via email address now. I know bank of america does and i think chase does too.  other than that, paypal is a very useful service.

I pay my rent with online bill payments from my bank.  Every month, a check is automatically generated by the bank and mailed to my landlord.  Presuming your tenant just doesn’t want to write checks, this should suit them just fine.
