fabric mulch cover all over my yard - what to do?

Agreed. It really depends on what your plan is. Look carefully at the conditions in you yard before you remove it. Many people new to having a yard have grandiose ideas of beautiful grass and gardens. Here in Brooklyn most of us have intense shade that limits our options. It might be very nice to keep the plastic and then do a hardscape patio in the center with raised garden beds at the borders.

Hi – we moved in to a house over the summer and are just now getting to the backyard.  There seems to be a layer of black pastic-ey fabric covering the entire back yard.  It’s coming up in many places but not everywhere.  What should I do about it?? Thanks!

If you want to plant on top of where it is, take it up. If not (i.e. if you want to put down pavers, pebbles, mulch, etc., leave it. It sounds like the material that’s intended to prevent weeds. I once covered a yard in it and then covered it with mulch. Didn’t have to do any weeding after that.

It really depends on your plan for your backyard.  It’s very useful to have under gravel or pavers, because of the weed prevention (well, weed reduction – nothing really prevents weeds.)  If you would like to plant a few things like trees or bushes, you can cut Xes in the fabric and plant in the hole(s) you made.  If you have more ambitious plans, and want to plant grass or a border, best to remove the landscape fabric from that area.
