Where to buy cast iron radiators?
Hi We are converting from steam to hot water and are told we will need to replace radiators. Looking for traditional radiators. Has any researched good place to buy and willing to share? Thanks

http://www.ocsind.com/cast-iron-radiators.php They manufacture old style, modern every custom size, shape etc. And they are in Brooklyn. Support local manufacturing! Their Cleopatra model is the classic.

I have had great luck with New England Demolition and Salvage… http://www.nedsalvage.com/products.html I think we paid about $10 / fin for an unfinished radiator and about $15 – $20 for a freshly powder coated radiator. When we last went they had about 500 – 700 beautiful radiators in stock, both hot water and steam. Many of them were gorgeous victorian rads. Harry who runs the joint is a really nice old man and will deliver the rads to Brooklyn for about $500\. The trick to buying the radiators is understanding the EDR requirements for each room and what the EDR is of each rad. Dan Holohan wrote or edited an incredibly thorough compendium on EDR called Every Darn Radiator. Its a little nerdy but a good read and not that hard to understand.

Convert your steam radiators. It will be messy, you will need a bunch of different diameter bushings, a sawzall, some big pipe wrenches, and some patience. We have over the years bought whatever taps we needed on Ebay. Not every radiator can be saved, but most will make it. For new radiators, Hicks St still has an awful lot in their Red Hook warehouse.

The Architectural Parts Warehouse in Albany has some which have been tested and are in working order. Not sure if they have enough for a whole house, but you could call them and ask. Also the place in Gowanus, under the elevated tracks (by Lowe’s parking lot) has a whole bunch. Not sure what condition they are in, but it’s a lot closer than Albany.
