Radiator & Safety

We moved into 100 year old house with steam heat via radiators. They have nice covers made of metal with little holes in the front for air flow. This type of heating system is a first for me so now that winter’s almost here I’m wondering if it dangerous to put things on top of the metal cover or am I worrying too much? Thanks

sometimes stuff put on top of the radiator covers will pull paint off them too or otherwise stick a bit, depending on the paint that was used. I’m thinking of plant pots, books, magazines, etc.

see what gc says – not hot enough to boil water or to ignite papers.  My worry about ours is keeping the plants far enough away so they do not dry out and wilt.   Steve

Its hot – so if you have items that are heat sensitive (the lcd screen on your phone for instance) – don’t place them there.  Nor candles, etc. if you’re worried about fire… well – don’t be. steam is nowhere near hot enough to start a fire. If you have synthetic materials in nearby cutains however, it may deform them if they contact the radiator or cover (nylon, in particular will start melting rather easily. Mainly you’re worrying too much – use common sense, and keep in mind the tempuratures are going to be around water boiling, or lower… not high enough for combustion.
