It’s really scary out there. Way too many unqualified “contractors” out there……….

You probably got what you paid for.

Why is this person your “contractor”? And why is your contractor installing your radiators?

I can only guess as to the reason for this debacle. The installer most likely could not get his wrench on the riser pipe and the valve at the same time. He was afraid (rightly so) to install the valve without holding back on the riser, so he had a great idea! (not really), “Hrmmmm, If I just raise the height so I can grab the pipe, I can hold back, install the valve and we will be ok!” But alas, this is not to be so! At least not on a one pipe system. He needs to get rid of the coupling and nipple, and install the valve directly on the riser. Any fittings should be black malleable steam fittings. The radiator should be slightly pitched back toward the riser (if one pipe). He may need to have a helper hold back on the riser on the floor below while he installs the valve. Good luck

what in the name of god is this…this is so amateurish it is embarrassing….get rid of the coupling and nipple so that is not pitching downward, get the right size valve for the radiator takeoff just for starters. Lay odds that the air vent is missized and incorrectly located

tell him that install is unacceptable. Its up to him to figure out why and how to correct, but it helps if you have that info handy just in case. For starters, you have a downhill run to the radiator. Then, you have pipe diameters that are all over the place. We won’t even get into how sloppy it is.

tell him that unless it is a two pipe system is it not going to work. It will flood with water, bang a lot and make you really mad. that radiator should be up off the ground and sloped a little toward the valve. Wait for a plumber to pipe in here (no pun intended) as maybe he could have done a better job reducing the pipe size. Steve
