Radiant Heat
We are installing hydronic radiant heat in a brownstone and my plumber and I have a disagreement. Everywhere I looked online, they recommend to have the heat running for a couple of days before installing the flooring. We are putting laminate. My plumber finished two floors and says it’s ready for the flooring. He says there is no need to run the heat first, he tested the system and there is no leak. Has anyone put down floors without turning on the heat first?

You said he “finished 2 floors”. Does that mean he hasn’t finished the whole system? While he may have pressure tested the completed zones, he may not want the fire up the system before he is finished (even though it’s possible to do it.) If he has finished, why do you need him to turn it on. Finally, not convinced you need to run the system for laminate in warm weather like this. You should probably open the boxes and allow the material to acclimate for a few days, but that’s it. Either way don’t listen to me or what you read online, read the manufacture’s data sheet and do what they say; including confirmation it can, and how it should, be installed over radiant.

Seems you know more from reading on the internet than professional you hired.

Who hires a temperamental plumber? Tell him to turn the friggin’ heat on and cut the crap. You want it tested and running before the floor goes down over it. It’s basic, standard, common, sensible practice.

We are not sure why. He is a bit temperamental to say the least. Of course, he is not going to trust another “online” source. He says he has been doing this for years and has never turned the heat on.

You have to run the heat so everything expands and acclimates. What possible reason could your plumber be giving you for not running the heat first?
