It’s been a couple weeks now since I switched to the honeywell wifi thermostat and its night and day difference between that and the nest. It’s accurate, simple and trouble free. The nest needs to “learn” but really who needs that? I can tell you from day 1 right away what my schedule is. can anyone honest say their thermostat settings needs to change constantly? The honeywell is simple an gets to the point. You have all the same remote features as the nest. I can remotely turn on and off as well as set the temperature. I can also set the temp to hold for a specific duration. On the nest I can change the temp and it will warm up the room and then stop. I have to go back again if I want it to hold for the whole day(say I took the day off from work). But that’s not the worse part the nest will take all those one off ad-hoc settings as data to “learn” from. Also it could be the nest I had but others on the web have reported it too. The device heats up too much and gives the wrong room temp reading. It would be ok if it was constantly 5 degrees higher but it fluctuates so you can’t just add an offset number to it. Sometimes it’s 2 degrees off sometimes its 7…very aggravating.

The Nest is great, the biggest attribute being you can control it from outside your home. I also like it’s “auto-away” feature which turns the heat down in winter when you’re not there (and up in summer for AC). This is great for if you forget to turn it off on a weekend trip or whatnot. Also great for telling if someone is home, when checked via the mobile device while not at home. As discussed, the learn feature is unusable unless you have a fairly set schedule day-to-day.. but how hard is it to program your own schedule anyway? Installation is like any other thermostat, same wires. Although I don’t know the compatibility from furnace to furnace.

Check out the White-Rodgers Sensi thermostat. Works really well for me. You can control from iphone, android or any computer. Same than Nest without the “learning” feature, which I don’t like. Super easy to install and most configurations don’t need a C-wire. I prefer to be able to control everything myself. You can find it for $100 online.

You can also check out the Ecobee thermostats. I installed an Ecobee SI and it’s really great – totally reliable and I can see usage data just like the Nest. The Ecobee SI is also $100 cheaper. They do have an Ecobee 3 that is more similar to a Nest.

I installed a Nest about 2 weeks ago and its going back. It’s one of the worse products I have bought. It cannot do its primary job accurately. It constantly reports the current temperature as much too high(off by as much as 6 degrees). If you read the amazon reviews and even the Nest community message boards you will see this is a very common thing. I wired it using just 2 wires since I only have heat. I thought the lack of a C wire was causing then problem so I ran another wire to add constant 24v power to it but still the same problem. The thing flat out doesn’t work. I have tried all the various “fixes” and it does not help. It might be a nicely designed and visually appealing but the fact it doesnt function correctly as a thermostat is a deal breaker. I purchased a honeywell wifi thermostat to replace it. Prior to the nest I had on a 20 dollar cheapo honeywell non programmable that worked and was highly more accurate.

I also read the scary Amazon reviews but got the Nest anyway. So happy, I did. Not sure why the reviews are so negative. What you’re paying for is convenience- at the end of the days it’s a thermostat, so not sure what the negative reviewers were hoping for. The benefit of the Nest is that I can control the heat from my phone. It also tells me how many hours per day the heat is on and I can see a nice graphic of usage.

I have both a nest and a Honeywell Wifi in different properties. The Nest is “nice” to look at. I’m not so sure about the money saving features it claims. My reason was I was looking to control the thermostat on some rentals from far away. So I turned of all the “features” and use it as normal programmable thermostat with Wifi built in. Overall has been pretty reliable in detecting temperature and staying online. It’s nice that I can check it anywhere from my phone and have always been able to connect. I have one Nest on an oil fired boiler and another on a gas fired boiler. Both only use 2 wires (No C wire here). The other nice thing is you can check how many hours your boiler ran that day with reports they provide. The BAD thing about that Nest is that they occasionally release firmware updates and you have NO choice to opt out. The last one was about 2 weeks ago and cause a lot of Nests to go offline. Not so great if you are far away. They then came out with 2 more updates the following week that fixed the issue. I fortunately was not affected because I didn’t get the 1st bad update, but the revision pushed out later on. It was a bad time of the year to release firmware and they should let you opt out. That to me is the worst thing about the Nest. The Honeywell is nice also and I only installed it because my Nest was creating some buzzing noise on gas valve of the boiler I attempted to install it on. This one I ran the C wire. The Honeywell has also proved reliable, but I miss that I cannot see when the boiler is actually running like the Nest (turns orange) and I also miss seeing the runtime of my boiler. Regarding installation any good boiler electrician should be able to wire it. It’s not different than any other thermostat.

Make sure it works with your system. It doesn´t work with Mitsubishi Heatpump, that´s all I know.
