My friends who use gas pay far less for heating than I do. Can anyone provide a comparison of the current cost of heating using oil vs gas? And some sense of the trends over the last ten years?

fundamentally oil and gas cost the same. Because many power utility companies use dual fuel systems. So they arbitrage any price difference. But there are many details to this. i.e. with oil you inccure carry cost and the oil spot price is cheaper then gas. As musterplvmber said, your heating cost mostly depend on how well insulated your house and how efficient your heating system is. If you about to replace system, I would go with gas because it is more convineient, you do not need to handle oil tanks and it does not stink.

In the conversions I’ve been doing, the real savings came in part by the difference in fuel prices and efficiency, but more from doing the math on the building and installing the right size boiler for once in the building’s life.
I’m in the process of dealing with a 20-family building with a 3.5 million BTU boiler and a steam heating system that can only handle 900,000 BTUs. This place is going to reduce its fuel costs by about 50% by the time I’m done with them.
It’s an extreme case, but I’m fascinated by how often this kind of thing comes up every fall.

I use gas for forced air heat and hot water…2 family, 2,560 sq ft and 4 people and it’s about $1,900 per year…..very tight thermal pane windows and insulated cockloft make a big difference too
