How much was your oil bill for January?

Mine was $2000\. Call me crazy, but that seems crazy. Unfortunately, I’ve only owned it a couple of months, so I don’t have a good point of reference. So how much was yours? This is a 5 bedroom, 3-story (+ basement) brownstone with a hot water system. The previous owners said it cost them around $600 per month to heat it in the winter, so even if they lied a little bit, it’s still off by a lot. Is it possible that my house is hemorrhaging this much heat, or are the tenants cranking the thermostat and opening all their windows?

The cost of our oil is the same this year as last. The OP’s previous owners did not say their oil bill averaged $600 a month — they said it was about $600 a month in the winter, which is exactly what ours was too until this winter. Our first year in the house our bill averaged out to $200 a month or $2400 the whole year.

First, don’t let the tenant control the thermostat, put it in a locked cage if necessary. My gas bill was $620 for Jan, $440 for Dec. 4-story, semi-detached. Oil would be higher. dibs etc: with that high a bill, OP must’ve used up more than a tank full, which is what, 175gal? … or at least $750?

For contrast, we chose balanced billing with natural gas heating a 4 story brownstone (attached only on one side), and our Nat Grid heating bill has been $215/month. Our gas for cooking is another $35 +- monthly. While $2k for January seems like a lot, remember it’s going to be $150 in July. The previous owners averaging $600/mo annually is probably about right.

Heating oil prices have surged this winter because inventories were already very low (on both sides of the Atlantic) before the polar vortex set in. The cold has been extreme, and the impact in New York and the northeast (the main heating oil consumption region in the US) has been exacerbated by inadequate natural gas supply/logistics to meet the heating demand, which puts additional pressure on distillates/oil products for heat. For all those who oppose fracking in New York State, we do not have the natural gas boom like neighboring Pennsylvania and have not invested in natural gas distribution, so there are consequences. We end up burning more coal and oil for power and heat instead of natural gas, which of course has environmental trade-offs. The good news, from a heating oil price perspective, is winter will pass and underlying crude oil prices are stable, not rising (in part because of the US supply boom). Insulation is worth the investment!

So far we’ve received two bills during January for a total of $1,200, which is indeed completely crazy. Our thermostat has been set low — at about 67 degrees — and our tenants have been opening the windows even though I’ve asked them repeatedly to stop. I haven’t completely freaked out yet because I have to sit down and analyze the bills, but I am pretty sure we’ve never paid more than $700 for any single month before ever. The total amount of oil we used was 262 gallons.

It’s the number of gallons used during the heating season, not how much oil was delivered or the cost since the oil prices varies. Natural gas is currently a much cheaper source of heating and a conversion pays for itself in just a few years.

How many gallons and when was it last filled? You need to average it out over the Winter as it’s not a constant flow like with gas so not apples to apples.

You can’t really base it off your January bill, how many gallons was that $1,000\. He might’ve been paying $600 a month but always had a certain amount of gallons in the tank, if you had an empty tank it would seem like you wasted more. And of course controlling the thermostat can make a big difference in heating bills It has also been a cold winter so far, my last coned bill which came today, was for $1,048, around $100 of that is the hallway lights, but the rest is heat/hot water

There’s one thermostat for the house, and the tenants control it. It’s an oil burner, but not really old, as far as I understand.

Is there really individual thermostats per unit for an old oil burner? If so Im not surprised and this is just one reason people switch over to gas. Also depending on where your main thermostat is and you window situation, if they oil burner was running constantly that number isn’t that crazy unfortunately.
