Gas Boiler Not Starting: Need Boiler Tech

We found out this weekend that our gas boiler won’t start. Did the obvious things like check the switch, fuse and water level. The thermostat is calling for heat. Any recommendations for a reliable and reasonable guy or company to check it out. Suspect it’s an ignition issue of some sort. Thanks.

We had the exact same problem and in spite of paying to have our boiler serviced every year, it hadn’t been done correctly. Called Carmine based on yelp reviews and found him to be very reasonable. Even if the unit doesn’t have a standing pilot light, the auto ignition may not be working correctly. Here’s a good DIY article: http://www.hvac-for-beginners.com/boiler-troubleshooting.html Don’t kill yourself and others messing about too much with the gas. If you have to call in the pros, I would try the company who installed the unit or last maintained it. They usually have a sticker on the boiler. If it hasn’t been maintained in awhile, maybe it’s best to call someone over for an overhaul anyway.

Green: What you’re describing sounds more like a hot water heater than a boiler. The boiler has an electronic ignition and there is no pilot light as far as I know. RH: Ill look for a reset button. Thanks to both of you. If I’m unable to get it started do either of you have a guy you can recommend?

Ditto on pilot light. Also, sometimes there is a reset button on the boiler apart from the main switch. I have one that is hidden behind the unit and you’d never find it unless you knew it was there. It’s a good idea to put fresh batteries in the thermostat as well. Sometimes it looks like it’s working fine but for some reason only kicks in after changing batteries. Before calling someone in, see if you can find some troubleshooting tips on your particular boiler model online. It will save you a few hundred bucks and you can pat yourself on the back!
